Wednesday Open Thread
The RNC kicked off main events yesterday with speeches from Bush, Fred Thompson, and Lieberman. Tonight Palin will speak; I predict lots of interest from both the right and the left in what she'll say.
The Bush admin is planning an aid package for Georgia, up to $1 billion for reconstruction that could potentially include military aid.
Open thread. What's on your mind this Wednesday?

'October Surprise' Over Palin Investigation?
"The Alaska state senator running an investigation of Gov. Palin says the McCain campaign is using stall tactics to prevent him from releasing his final report by Oct. 31, four days before the November election.
"
They go on to say:
"The Governor first issued a blanket denial but now she's had to back down and that's a problem," said French. "She has a credibility problem," he said...The controversy over the firing of public safety commissioner Monegan has been simmering for months in Alaska. Monegan has alleged he was fired because he rebuffed pressure from the Governor and her husband to dismiss her (now ex) brother-in-law who served as a state trooper.
Palin says that she dismissed Monegan over an honest disagreement over budget priorities.
French says the McCain campaign failed to contact any of the Senators involved in the investigation during the vetting process of Gov. Palin. "

OK....I understand you support her NRA membership. I'm not against the NRA so that one doesn't much matter to me. I think you like her bringing her religious views into governing as a philosophy.
But so much seems to be duplicitous. She isn't going to get any of Hillary's supporters but she has inspired the Christian Right republicans. What do you see of her that makes John McCain a better candidate?
My reasoning is thus ...
if the leftists are agin' 'er, I'm f'r 'er! :)
She's a no lose for me. Either they are against her for what they feel are good reasons ... which means I'll think that they are bad reasons ... or they're just blowin' smoke and having her around will annoy people who deserve to be annoyed. There's no downside for me.

Hunting from Planes!??!?!??!?!
I'm guessing that its hard to shoot a moving target while in a plane thats flying in circles.
I wonder how many animals get away with gun shot wounds or die a slow death.
Overpopulation control and food for poor rural families where there is amble animal population are about the only legit reasons to hunt, imo.
And then, if there's hunting, there should be steps taken that what is shot, is killed as quickly as possible and as pain free as reasonably possible.
Hunting animals from planes is far too close to being as cruel as finding random dogs on the street and having them fight in order to stop stray dog attacks.

Noonan and Murphy Trash Palin in "private"...
Of course, Noonan and Murphy aren't real conservatives...Yet Noonan writes in public about how shrewd the pick is. You can read her spin of what she "meant" here
.
For the record, I think it was a shrewd pick by McCain. I expect her to give a stellar speech based on what I've seen in the debates on You Tube of her in Alaska. Whether it will sway enough voters, we'll have to see. Has anybody out of the upper Northwest had any mooseburgers? Does it taste more American than argula?
On a more serious note, I think Palin has come under unfair attacks on her family, as the Obama campaign has admitted. I think we should focus on the issues (although Rick Davis doesn't think so). But vetting her past based on her past Life in Alaska (including shady party associations and pastors) is no more sexist than vetting Obama's associations with Rezko and his notorious pastor is racist.

"A society that puts equality before freedom will have neither. A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both." ~ Milton Friedman
It's a difficult election this year.
The base doesn't love McCain. The liberals don't fully trust Obama but both groups will vote their side.
It's the middle that will matter. What does Palin bring for the middle? She's telegenic, and Rick Davis, McCain's Campaign Manager is trying extremely hard to make the election about trust and forget about the issues
which would help the Repubs. If it were about the issues they'd lose in a big way.
But it will be the issues that end up mattering. The public is worried about the direction of the country, the economy and the future. McCain says we need to just keep doing what we're doing but do more of it. Palin's preferances would scare the hell out of my eastern republican family. Some may love her but she has said some things which are decidedly more like John Birch Society than the "libertarian" she would like to project. People don't want the government to have the right or the left tell them what they can & can't do & she wants to control. Not a good fit right now.
The economy will be the clincher. Much as Rove tries, Obama just isn't scaring the nation. Guess we've grown some.
You've made a good point, kindness.
Although this:
pretty much says it in a nutshell, here's one liberal who won't be voting for either side. I'll probably just go and write in my own candidate(s) at the polls come November. Regardless of what anybody says, at least that's doing something.
It's funny. The right has slimed Obama's family mercilessly,
they've thrashed his wife, they've thrashed him but they haven't yet touched his kids. Of course the idiot right has savaged children. Most recently Chelsea Clinton
who was smacked around like a pinata by many talking heads as well as:
"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father". -John McCain himself, 1998. Very classy John.
Now I'm not in favor of going after the 17 yo Palin daughter. I'm OK with using her as an example of why her mothers abstinence only ideas are ass backwards. Other than that, no, I don't want to repeat the errors of the right. We are better than that. But the family as far as what it represents...fair game. Really. That family is being sold to the public as the virtuous & wholesome reason to trust the McCain Presidency. Because the right will continue to go after Obama's family to scare the bejeeses out of America and portray Palin's as what to aspire for, I'm sorry but the family is fair game. From what I've read in this short 4 days, they are not a perfect family and their excentricities will be known. It's the left's turn to scare the bejeeses out of America this time.
The right (i.e. Limbaugh) was rather gleeful
in attacking Jamie Lynn Spears' teen pregnancy and how it was a product of her dysfunctional family, blah, blah, blah.

Sarah Palin....lying to the nation's face on national TV.
Last night at times I thought she sounded like a high school cool kid taunting the not cool kids. She is truly a wonderful fit for a 3rd bush43 term. She said:
1) She was against the bridge to nowhere when in truth in 2006 she actively campaigned for it while running for Governor.
2) She said she thanks but no thanks on the bridge to nowhere but guess what? She got & kept the $223 million allocated for the bridge.
3) Alaska also got $38 million for the access road to the bridge to nowhere. Guess what? That road is being built right now with that money.
4) She was against Federal largess when she was using Abramhoff's lobbyists to get earmarks while both Mayor of Wasila & Governor of Alaska. While mayor she was able to get $1000 Federal earmarks per constituent which is about 50 times the national average.
5) She says she's pro life but pro life includes not only being against abortion but also against the death penalty which she supports. She really is anti abortion, not pro life (ask your Catholic priest, he'll tell you the difference)
6) She said (previously) that her 17 yo daughter and her family had made the choice to keep the daughters baby while she has stated she would make it Federal policy not to allow other citizens that same choice. No, she'd make it for you as she would illegalize abortions.
Yea....Peggy Noonan was right. Sarah Palin isn't the best candidate for the job, but look at who she makes happy. That speaks for itself

I didn't watch too much of the Democratic convention, so I don't
have much of comparisson of what I saw from Palin and the Democratic speakers.
Its interesting that she was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it.
In her words about the bridge to nowhere:
Her feelings on withdrawing from Iraq in 2006:
In our society, people are rewarded for pretending to be certain about things they're clearly not certain about. -- Sam Harris,
Digby prints an e-mail from a Wasila resident. Palin doesn't
come out looking very good. Full post is here
. Cliff notes (hard to cut any of it down but here goes):
During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had
gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.
Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative". During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the
City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they
benefited residents.
The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said
she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it
would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing. While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once.
In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while
she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's surplus, borrow for needs.
She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by
her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.
Sarah complained about the "old boy's club" when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal--loyal to the point of abusing their power
to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State's top cop.
Sounds to me like a 3rd bush43 Administration through and through.
She rocked-You're scared-And that's fine! LOL! n/t
