A McCain Upset in the Making?
In my spectator role of this upcoming election, I've been becoming and increasingly and quietly intrigued about what could happen and what it could mean....in much the same way that I watch the analysts discuss the prospects of the upcoming NFL season. Former pros turned "analysts" and journalists are caressing their collective chin while scanning a multitude of factors to make the bold claim...namely that Team XYZ, in spite of current perceptions, is the "team to watch" or the "team to beat". See below for video.
Recalling what a friend and across-the-pond political observer in France said to me last spring...namely that despite the current mood, McCain would win when the last vote was counted.
Is he right? I scoffed at the idea when I first heard it. But now, I begin to believe he may be on to something.
In the video, Mike Fynn of Reason, seemingly almost like a sports bookie with the cigarette in hand, looks at the Palin nomination as yet another subtle move toward that McCain victory....a victory that seemed like a joke just last spring.
He also talks about how McCain has been dictating the campaign narrative and keeping Obama on defense. Flynn feels a strong convention showing by McCain could give McCain a bounce that he never relinquishes on his way to victory in November. Could it happen??
Personally, if that were to come to pass, my awkward and embarrassed gaze would be fixated on the inconsolable Democrats. What would it mean for them if they lost an election that seemed handed to them on silver platter? What changes would that provoke? Would it provoke any? Would the Dems look inward and re-examine their policies? Would they start working to change their "brand"? Who knows. I know the Left of Center would rather not think about that unthinkable situation but it could happen.
Interesting food for thought....

We'll do a predictions game for President
and for Congress. Then we'll see who really knows what they're talking about =)
I'm feeling pretty good about the Dems chances. I don't see McCain on the attack, I see his campaign having to put out fires all over the place with Palin's record after his apparently impetuous pick.
When you look at the state-by-state polling Obama seems to be on solid ground. I don't necessarily advocate electoral-vote.com
as being super accurate but their current map shows that McCain is in big trouble -- he can win Ohio and Florida and still lose easily. (FWIW, 538
also has Obama winning handily.)
That said I have no audio at work so I'll have to wait to watch the video to comment further.

Sarah Palin has
taken all the McCain campaign focus off Obama and put the spotlight on his VP pick who just can't seem to stay out of the headlines.
So far the convention has cancelled two speakers, Rudy Guilliani and Arnold the Gov. of California.
While most social conservatives are completely jazzed about Palin, there are other elements of the Republican party left behind. Will this generate hard feelings among Republican moderates?
I don't see anyway that picking an authoritarian creationist for VP will boost McCain's cred with independents for the general election.
From the coverage I've seen so far, the twin cities just doesn't have the buzz or very big crowds. The only buzz being created is about Sarah Palin 24/7.
Is it a good thing or a bad thing to have the Republican base be more excited about the VP pick than the candidate himself.
It is the economy, stupid.
And the sky is falling...! Predictable & Boring... n/t

The problem for the Democrats is...
...they have been over ran by this way left contingent. I see them moving more left next cycle. And yes this POTUS loss will devastate the brand and whatever party unity they have been able to muster.

Sorry about the double post.
The server I'm proxying on has some glitches.
Ah shoot
Did I delete the post with content while you were removing text from the other one?
Sorry if so. I just noticed a double post and deleted one of them and then forgot about it and went to do something else.

Oops. Yea. No big. It was a Reverend Wright vs Sarah
Palin's preacher cage match.
Apparently he feels Jesus was a hard right conservative. I think I got the link from TalkingPointsMemo. Let me go see. Nope, it was HuffingtonPost.
Remember all the things that were linked to Obama because of what Wright said? Here's what Ed Kalnins, the senior pastor of Wasilla Assembly of God since 1999 has said:
1) preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell
2) questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted to heaven
3) charged that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and war in Iraq were part of a war "contending for your faith"
4) said that Jesus "operated from that position of war mode."
5) offered a not-so-subtle message about his personal candidate preferences. "I'm not going tell you who to vote for, but if you vote for this particular person, I question your salvation. I'm sorry."
6) has preached that the 9/11 attacks and the invasion of Iraq were part of a "world war" over the Christian faith, one in which Jesus Christ had called upon believers to be willing to sacrifice their lives.
7) He preaches repeatedly about the "end times" or "last days"
8) He also claims to have received direct "words of knowledge" from God
Sounds like a "peculiar conservative theology" to me. Heavy on the dogma, fire & brimstone & threats of eternal damnation if one doesn't vote the way he votes.
I wonder which book of the Bible that peculiar interpretation of Jesus is in?
You have got to be kidding me?
There is a little difference between praying for America, and praying for the destruction of America.
You seem to think Christianity is some sort of fringe group, it's not. As we've established it makes up 85% of America's people!
So lets see... Why don't you go watch some of Jeremiah Wright's greatest hits, I think "God Damn America" his first was a best seller, or the sequel, "Rid'in Dirty" and - then get back to us.
Sad...

Jesus isn't a Republican and never told anyone who to vote for
Honestly, if you can point to anywhere in either Old or New Testament that says he did, I'll apologize.
To suggest that a far right wing Christian sect represents the majority of Christian beliefs is a falsehood.
You can pull your head out now.
Insha'Allah
I have to look into that pastor's feelings on the end of days.

There are many interpretations of the Bible
Me re-reading the Book of Revelation won't help me figure out what is in that pastor's head or his past statements on the matter.

It's the same as creationist belief...
Those same Christians will fall out along the same lines, the teaching of the book of revelation is not news Brutus?

Where's Barry's Base?
I've written before about Barack Obama's ties to the far, far
left.
In 1996, he sought the New Party endorsement.
The New
Party has, by 1996, become the party of Communists and other
radicals. It was, for all intents and purposes, an amalgamation of
CCC, CPUSA, Green, and Social-Democrat parties.
As I noted then
A New Party member, writing in the Chicago Democratic Socialists
of America newsletter in 1996, described the New Party as mostly
made up of ACORN members. The member, Bob Roman, wrote, "As the
single 800 pound gorilla in the Chicago New Party, it doesn't leave
a lot of room for newcomers to participate except on ACORN's
terms." Obama, if you will remember, worked for ACORN and in 1996,
ACORN was not organizing the community, they were getting people
out to vote for Barack Obama.
It should come as no surprise then, this morning, to read this
:
Yet again, ACORN rallies for Obama.
The man is a leftist radical with a messiah complex. If you
still want to vote for him, go right ahead, but just know who you
are dealing with.

How nice... More hate?
'Meanwhile, our economy continues to crumble, while crime, homelessness and poverty continue to soar.'
Huh?
'Despite the fact that thousands of immigrants risk their safety to come here because this country may offer them better opportunities, the truth is that poverty lives right here in our own backyard.'
...Ppfff...What?
"Plenty of Americans would rather stay in their dream state than to recognize the poverty sweeping across the country, right here, right now."
