Reasons Politics is Sickening: Reason #1: Laughing at Bad Things Happening to Good People in the Name of Political Advantage

Check out this video .

It shows two Democrats, including former DNC Chairman Don Fowler, laughing at the prospects of Hurrican Gustav hitting New Orleans during the GOP Convention.

God must favor the Democrats, says one of the slime balls.

Like I always say, It's all about the politics. It's all about the power. Nothing is sacred and all is fair game in the name of partisanship.

Pathetic. Video and more below the fold.

Of course, it does nothing to change my perception of the Dems. In fact, I fully expect this stuff from them and the GOP as well when they think nobody is looking.

This might get ugly.

Life goes on

I wonder what the Federal Government percieves it's roll is going to be, this time around.

Have they left the responsibility for preparation for a natural disaster to the governors and the mayors?

I imagine Louisiana is still not financially recovered as far as state and city revenues.

It is the economy, stupid.

…………

Sigh. As I expected....

Reactions among our Red and Blue faithful here in matters like this will always depend on who utters the outrageous comment.

Take it from "Gold Yellow Nation": it's disgusting. :(

Too bad for them that they got caught on camera.

………… parent

I don't think it's funny

I also have more serious concerns...... like how the people are going to cope.

The question isn't that people are stupid. People are always stupid.

You have to admit that there is a certain irony that the wind would blow the week of the GOP convention.

It is the economy, stupid.

………… parent

Nevermind the big screen, do not look at the video...

... you are just unbelievable.

Have to be the most partisan, deaf and blind kind of partisan, I have seen here at SC!

They're talking about an impending DISASTER ML!

The kind where a horrible thing is likely to happen to thousands of AMERICANS!

Why do you think I'm an independent?

Politics isn't about good governance or ideas, its about beating the other team at any cost. This is further reinforced by our 2-party system. Everything that is wrong with the country is the other team's fault.

It gets worse every year, and why? Because treating politics like a football game works. My team always, right or wrong.

What's the score?

It's hard, really hard, not to feel angry at the utter lack of compassion (they brought it on themselves, by sinning being poor, etc. ) Republican politicians had the first time around for the people who suffered.

Especially when Mr. Big Chops, Haley Barbor, from Mississippi took the money to rebuild homes and used it to build casinos instead.

I am not laughing.

You didn't get Commadant Kos' memo? Liberals are having

Don't get Parody? How about sarcasm?

I'll tell you sick mothers...

Today the St. Paul Police used SWAT teams of 20 to 30 officers each to raid 4 houses(so far) to detain reporters, photographers, lawyers & protesters prior to the start of the RNC convention.

Glen Greenwald was also on had for two of the raids & gives his commentary . It appears the authorities are trying to scare the political opposition with questionable "preventive" detentions. There's George W Bush's America for you....inching closer to a police state every day.

No I don't get that sort of parody!

Telling jokes about Katrina in general is in poor taste, but to do it when it's about to happen again is unconscionable!

I own a Kitchen and Bath Showroom, and when Katrina hit we went to NO and were there for two weeks setting up facilities to provide clean drinking water.

If you saw what I saw - you would be humiliated and sorry for "parodying" such a catastrophic loss of property and humanity!

I think we all hope

that Gustav either weakens or misses heavily populated areas, and that there is minimal damage from the storm.

People have different ways of reacting, and humor is a funny thing. As I see it kindness was trying to make the point that of course liberals in general are concerned about the hurricane. Let's just try to assume the best in our political adversaries and like Stinerman says if we can't get along then no need to reply, there are always other discussions.

I think he just

made a deliberately ludicrous comment in order to say the opposite. I suppose phrasing it in terms of a joke like that leaves open the possibility of misinterpretation. IMHO this is the sort of exchange that doesn't make as much sense over the internet; face-to-face I bet we'd all be agreeing right now.

FWIW I think we all consider the exchange in the airplane to be pretty tone deaf and myopic. I read on CNN that the GOP is considering using the convention to raise money and aid if that looks to be needed, which would be great.

cmon John don't be a sucker

What can you do sometimes but laugh about something you have no control over?  Yeah, what he was saying was technically callous, but let's not buy the RedState faux outrage over this.  It's just some careless chatter by this guy that doesn't reveal much about his character except that OMG!  He's just like the rest of us.

I tell you what:  If you really believe this is indicative of how our legislators don't care about the people and are fired up about it, then let's make this motivate us right now, and say that if this hurricane hits hard, we're both going to go down there together to the Gulf Coast and volunteer for the cleanup.  In fact, let's get a bunch of SC-ers together and go down there. Because all that matters is action, the rest is BS.

…………

Relax, Skymutt

I have a default position of hating how partisan politics and politics in general tend to make people think and reason.

This is simply an extreme version of it.

And no, honestly, I can't go to N.O. right now. ;)

However, the backdrop behind being ready for a hurricane and the type of help that will be available speaks for itself.

Chances are that N.O. isn't going to be much better prepared in the event of a CAT 5 hurricane and the recovery will be less than perfect and limited by human limitations and impeded by bureaucratic bumbling that will amplify human limitations.

………… parent

That's not people "thinking and reasoning"

That's a couple of men on a long boring flight shooting the sh*t.  They weren't developing hurricane ressponse policy at that moment, nor was that their charge.  I don't think there's any indication that they were serving in any official capacity at that moment.

What a depressing, joyless world it would be if we had to limit our conversation at all times to the grave realities of this world, out of fear that someone was secretly recording us, and would use it against us by leaking the private conversation to the public.

The guy doing most of the talking is a former Democratic Party official.  The other guy is a Congressman.

Bush joked around about not being able to find WMDs, remember that?  You didn't hear a peep from me about that.  I don't care if people joke around, are occasionally crude, make light of tragedy in a private conversation, and so forth, so long as they do their job when push comes to shove.

On everything in that second paragraph, I agree with you. But none of that is what I'm talking about.

What I'm talking is basically the title of the post.. Period.

Political victory at all costs. How myopic.

………… parent

Ya, you're wrong, and right.

Wrong - in that this is not how any of should react to a F'ing hurricane hitting an already stricken city. A joke is a joke, this idiot takes it over the top, to a callous, almost Orwellian level, regarding partisanship and the lack of connectivness to the people of the country!

Right - That you should go down there! They'll need the help, believe me. I was there for two weeks after Katrina and it will change your life. (Unless you're Oprah, then you just have to go to an Obama rally.)

Faith

by definition can't depend on evidence...

This is the Babel fish idea, right?

Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson

………… parent

Depends on your definition of evidence

I would tend to say faith is its own kind of evidence or knowing for the believers.

………… parent

Certainly not objective evidence, though

I would still say it is a sort of hidden knowledge. Faith in a deity or that a certain event will come to pass (the rapture for instance) cannot be explained to the faithless in a way that they could possibly understand. Faith could only come from an epiphany of sorts; people can only find faith in their own way.

Perhaps you might disagree with the last part. I believe I recall you saying you are studying to become a pastor. If you don't mind indulging me, I would be interested in how you see a pastor's relationship to his congregation in terms of helping them find faith.

I never broke the law; I am the law! -- George W. Bush Judge Dredd

………… parent

Good question

First off I think I agree with you except for faith being a hidden knowledge. It's open to all who would come and find it. However, you are correct in that's there no way for one peron to demonstrate it to another. Each person has to have their own experience with the
Holy - Sprit to truly understand spiritual truths.
As to the role of a pastor I think it's to point, those who are struggling with faith, to God and maintaining a relationship with him through prayer and Bible study. I believe it is only through a relationship with God that one can understand spiritual truth. I would tell of my experience with God ( including doubt) and how I came to a deep meaningful realtionship with him. This would hopefully encourage them to come to God and see for themselves of his goodness. But I cannot convict one of the truth of God, that is the job of the Holy-Spirit.

I don't see

how anyone gets any political advantage out of a hurricane coincidentally striking the US during any party convention. Would it be wrong

to ask your followers to pray for rain?

If God Decides

And this isn't funny either is it John?

These are the folks that are so excited about Sarah Palin's socially conservative credentials, also known as Bush/McCain foot soldiers.

Now that McCain has picked a fire breathing social conservative, the GOP has given him their blessing, by finally putting McCain's photo on the GOP web site. Of course he is pictured side by side with Sarah.

It is ironic that social conservatives were preying for torrential rain on Obama's big night, yet it is the GOP convention that is getting washed away.

I am saying ALL of the folks that preyed for rain, are equally as sickeningly partisan as your tape of guys laughing in private.

The difference is that the prayer makers were unashamed to do this in public.

(The things folks say in private, would likely make us hate all of humanity.)

It is the economy, stupid.

………… parent

Oh please - enough already...

"Social conservatives" weren't doing any such thing. Most Republicans are Socially conservative.

James Dobson represents the far christian right, its like saying all democrats were praying for the hurricane to hit N.O.?

Reason #649:

Bush and possibly McCain might try to capitalize on their compassion card by speaking from the hurricane zone.

I know that if I lived in an area that was trying to prepare / evacuate in advance of a major national disaster, what I’d really want would be for a presidential candidate to swing by for a campaign appearance, distracting local political officials and drawing down resources of the local public safety agencies. After all, it’ll look good on camera to be engaged with the problem!

The resources involved in protecting high profile figures would take away from the prevention and rescue efforts.

It is the economy, stupid.
