Thursday + Friday Open Thread

As was reported yesterday, Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) of the Fightin' 11th district died of an aneurysm late last night.

In Ohio news, today is the filing deadline for independent/minor party Presidential candidates. Ralph Nader (I), Cynthia McKinney (G), Chuck Baldwin (C), and Brian Moore (S) will very likely all be turning in their signatures today. Bob Barr (L) has already been placed on the ballot by the courts due to Ohio not having any constitutional method for creating a new political party. Moore also has a lawsuit in court to compel the state to place him on the ballot as the nominee of the Socialist Party.

The Democratic Convention starts on Monday. Surely a VP will be floated before the convention starts. Who do you think and/or hope it will be?

Mitt Romney is an idiot

Mitt thinks Russia is not entitled to host the Olympics because it invaded Georgia, a sovereign nation.

HEWITT: But I do want to ask you about the Olympics and your experience there, in terms of whether or not the Russians ought to get the Olympics in 2014 after what they’ve done in Georgia.

ROMNEY: Well, Hugh, my own view is as the Caucuses are a hot spot, and as Russians have shown their willingness to act militarily against a sovereign nation, that the International Olympic Committee ought to revisit locating the Games elsewhere.

That's rich.

If that's the criteria, then Mitt should be demanding that Chicago withdraw its bid to host the Olympics.

William Ayers is a respectable professor in Chicago.

Meh

McCain stopped working in 1982, but I'll give you that he put up with his share before then. I say 1982 because once you're elected to Congress, pretty much all you have to do is not screw up and you'll be re-elected until you retire or die.

No one can work hard enough to deserve 8 houses. And on the contrary, I know plenty of people who've worked hard every day of their lives and don't own a single house.

While there is a correlation between effort and income, I find it's a pretty weak one.

I don't expect this insight to be put into law; it's just my opinion. There is really no good way to legislate that people who work harder get paid more.

………… parent

Sure, as I plan on becoming a preacher in a small denomination

I will work hard all my life, and likely never be able to afford more than one house. My Grandparents worked hard at farming and wound up on welfare. The vast majority of Americans work hard and will never come close to what Obama and McCain have. However, redistributing the wealth for the sake of redistributing it would cause a decrease in freedom - see communism. Anyway the point is we live in a country where you have the opportunity of becoming wealthy, that's a choice some people make and put the effort into achieving and some do suceed ( or get lucky as in McCain's circumstance) so should we look at these people as being morally inferior, I believe not.

………… parent

Sure luck is always nice...

...but I disagree that most people will work hard all their lives and not have what Obama or McCain has.

America is an awesome place to succeed, if that is indeed what you want to do. Most people just settle into a groove and do their thing.

Think about it, next time your on a drive through town, think that every house, every business, every square foot of real estate (Except government owned) is owned by someone. Most of it by guys like you and me in our residences, or a rental or two. That is not unusual, many people own several properties!

And if you want to get rich, and you can't figure it out in America, you don't really want to be rich.

………… parent

People will work hard and not become millionaires

You can't say that those who aren't millionaires aren't working hard, and I don't imagine you are saying that. Now certainly many people could become wealthy if they chose to go down the path of becoming wealthy. But if everyone did that, than who would grow our food, and build our houses and roads...?

………… parent

Right... There's something for everyone.

Thats whats so great about America, you can be what you want to be.

I don't think John McCain or Barack Obama are out of touch.

In fact they are probably more in touch with it than you or I are simply because they're jobs require them to deal with it.

"A society that puts equality before freedom will have neither. A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both." ~ Milton Friedman

………… parent

And then point #2 is that both Obama and McCain are very

wealthy, and it's rather silly for either of them to attack the other on the issue. They are both sufficienty wealthy to be well out of touch with the average American. Neither candidate is facing any kind of serious financial difficulty. The " I have $10,000,000
( I'm not saying these are the actual figures) and you have $100,000,000 so you're out of touch" is kind of silly. Both candidates are out of touch financially with Americans, as were both candidates in 2004 and I imagine for a long time.
The sad point is that it's quite possible that things like McCain not remembering how many houses he has, and Obama's pastor... we will be the deciding factor for the small number of undecideds in the small number of swing states, and therefore will be what this election turns on and what the conversation of the election will be largely about.

………… parent

There is a difference

between being morally inferior and being out of touch.

Is there a difference between working hard to create your own luck.

Is it morally inferior to chase after a rich blonde that is 25 years your junior, while you are married to a woman who has been handicapped by a car accident. Is that working hard to create your on luck. Who's to say. People make their own judgements.

No one is advocating redistributing wealth just for the sake of it.

To make such an overly broad and incorrect statement is morally bankrupt, in my opinion.

It is the economy, stupid.

………… parent

Freedom is such a nebulous word

However, redistributing the wealth for the sake of redistributing it would cause a decrease in freedom - see communism.

"Freedom" has different meanings to different people. You seem to be talking about liberty, which is related to freedom but isn't the same thing. Someone who has little income or assets has very little freedom because they don't have the capital to do much with what liberty they have. Money buys freedom, but not liberty (at least not directly).

For instance, I'm unemployed and looking to get a job almost anywhere in my state (Ohio) or even the New England area or Alaska. Because I have no savings, I can't afford to actually move somewhere where I'd have a better chance of getting a good job (I've found places are a bit leery of hiring someone who wants to relocate). The government is not stopping me from moving, so my liberty is intact, but since I don't have the means to move, I don't have the freedom to do so. Not having the ability to make a decision because one doesn't have the money is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the government restricting me from doing so.

Not to go too much on a tangent, but this is why lower income people tend to see the government as being a helper, not a hinderer. Most of these people's freedom is restricted by lack of capital. Once one's income starts to rise, freedom is restricted by the government.

so should we look at these people as being morally inferior, I believe not.

I never made the case that McCain was morally inferior due to his wealth, so I don't know where you got that.

John Cole links to this about these McCain ads:

Though McCain is widely perceived to to drawn first blood by attacking Obama’s character, the official said that the difference between Obama’s mocking McCain for his wealth and his shaky answer on the number of homes he owns was that McCain’s charge “reflects an existential reality,” where Obama’s charges “attack Cindy. She owns the homes. I thought he said the wives were off-limits.”

Got it? When McCain can’t name how many houses he owns, it is attacking his wife to point it out.

Always the victim, these wankers.

BTW- is it elitist to discuss “existential realities"?

I enjoy the “existential reality” of Obama hating America vs. the entirely off limits discussion of which of the four to thirteen mansions that McCain’s family owns are really his, as opposed to his wife’s. I think it goes to the point that politician X inhabits a completely different world than the people he claims to represent, but then Obama lives in a different world as well, and so do most politicians.

I don't think this should be a big issue (certainly the ones you highlighted are much more important), but it does go to the heart of the McCain attack on Obama as being an elitist celebrity who is out of touch with the common man. ………… parent

The question tried to find if McCain has the same values as we

do. We being we the people.

When asked how many houses he & his wife owned, John McCain was stumped. He said he didn't know. It's been released that he has multiple properties with many, many houses all over the US.

When asked how much income per year is rich he stated that it took $5 Million a year to be rich.

The tax plan proposal that John McCain has released says it would give he & his wife Cindy a $373,429 refund (based on most recently available 2006 Federal Tax data). I don't know about you but the amount of that refund is several times what my family's total income is.

The question was answered eloquently by Senator McCain himself. He plainly told America he isn't remotely close to our values and has no idea what world we live in. John McCain simply told us he does not share our values nor will he and his enablers ever try to do so.

………… parent

If sharing the values of "We the people"

means not being rich, than both Obama and McCain don't share our values. Of course when I think of values I think of more than how much green stuff someone has.

………… parent

I've been watching this surreal exchange

and I'll just comment here with no specific reference toward you in particular:

The thing is, people of a more Leftward bent are trying to make "values" and "a similar assessment of economic realities" to be the same thing.

Now, if you don't agree with McCain on the definition of "rich", that's fine. I personally think his number is too high myself. But that's a question of definition and semantics.

Either way, I draw no correlation between his comments and his preferred policies and that is the only useful thing to draw from any of this.

Looking at your last paragraph, Kindness, we see the real matter at hand here.

You tie all these notions together into a meaningful conclusion toward policy implications. It doesn't need to be this way. And I don't think it is this way. McCain can very well understand the plight of struggling or cautiously comfortable middle class people and still not support policies that you would want. Why? because he simply doesn't see the positive value in doing so because he simply doesn't agree with promised benefit of doing it.

IOW,

The difference is not one of compassion or perception or empathy. It is a conceptual difference in policy and what results follow from what policy and what trade offs he is willing to risk in doing so with no guarantee of a positive result....a result that he simply may not think would follow.

The bottom line here is that none of these shots toward McCain matter in any way you would like them to.

McCain can very well want to preserve the tax cut on upper brackets and still empathize with or want to help adopt policies that he feels are helpful to lower classes. These points are not mutually exclusive.

………… parent

They may not matter.....

but there is definitely a perception problem with folks who vote by bumper sticker slogans.

The perception is one that some people are so rich that they don't even know how many houses they own is.

I would venture that the majority of FIVE millionaires know how many houses the own.

As for McCain's empathy quotient I have no clue if he cares about ordinary Americans or not.

It is the economy, stupid.

………… parent

Point is, You shouldn't be a bumper sticker voter. NT.

NT.

………… parent

That's true

but not realistic.

If McCain was smart he would start telling folks exactly how much he empathizes with folks who know how many houses they own, and why folks that don't own houses should vote for him.

Republicans definitely have the edge when it comes to bumper sticker slogans so that goes in McCain's favor.

It is the economy, stupid.

………… parent

But there's also a primal "bumper sticker emotion"

that is implicit in making conclusions about MCain based on his personal knowledge of his holdings.

There is no difference there. Bumper Sticker Slogans are supposed "sound meaningful" when you read them.,..even if they aren't. Well, "Bumper Sticker Emotions" are also supposed to "feel meaningful" when you get them...even if they aren't.

Playing Devil's advocate, if McCain doesn't see a necessary automatic connection between raising taxes on the rich and helping the rest, then he simply doesn't. The matter then necessarily goes to a more constructive level of policy content and not motivations or character.

………… parent

He does not believe...

in raising taxes on the 40 million rich to help the 40 million poor. The rich already pay all taxes, find another solution to help them, cut the unnecessary entitlement spending already being wasted and use that to "help" people.

There is already way to much money being thrown at that problem, money is not the answer.

………… parent

It's really very simple. What values does one have?

I linked to McCain's actual statements and data. It supports the idea that John McCain's values are not the values of 99% of Americans.

If you feel that has no bearing on the man or his presidential aspirations, that's your take. I do not agree with your take.

I especially enjoy pointing out this line as McCain's whole premise up to now was that he was a man of the people and Barack Obama was an elitist. I think McCain did great justice to smashing that facade and showing us all his true nature and comfort zone in the American society.

John McCain himself has clearly said he does not share my values. It isn't surreal. it's all very real. You want this oligarch to be our next president? I don't.

………… parent

No. I don't support McCain

But that meaningless side note does not stop me from disagreeing with how you evaluate who is who and why.

It supports the idea that John McCain's values are not the values of 99% of Americans.

OK. That's your take. But what does that mean that has any relevance in terms of policy? Because if you think it translates into support for xyz policy vs. abc policy, then what you are necessarily saying, to cut to the chase, is that certain results are attached to certain policies and that certain values are also attached to those policies.

………… parent

Look at the tax policy he is pushing.

It'll give the top 2% 40% of the refunds. It reduces taxes on corporations.

God knows when my family has a budget problem, we do both these:

we cut expenses
we find ways to get more income.

McCain's proposed tax plan is a supply side tax plan. We cheapen the rates on business & the rich and it'll trickle down to the masses and we will collect more money in taxes. That's been tried during Reagan & bush43. It has never worked. it only drives up National Debt.

I say we do the sensible thing that everyone here would have to do when faced with what the future holds for us. Not follow the small cadre who are pulling John McCain's strings. They don't want what's good for America. they only want what's good for themselves. That's self interest, but not enlightened self interest. there's a big difference.

………… parent

Do you honestly think that's the proper way to look at it?

top 2% 40% of the refunds. It reduces taxes on corporations.

Shouldn't you first ask what percentage of income taxes they paid and then see how their refund compares?

I don't have the total percentage in income tax paid by the top 2% but I know that the top 5% in 2006 paid over 60% of all income taxes...and the top 1% alone was just under 40% all by themselves. Then consider that the top 50% paid about 97%.

When talk of refunds come up, we're talking about just that...refunds....meaning on what was paid in income tax. It's only natural that the one's who paid more get more back. And actually, it would seem that the better percentage of the refund went disproportionally lower. If the top 1% paid 40% of taxes and the top 5% was over 60%, it would seem logical that the top 2% paid at least 50% if not more.

As for corporate taxes, I simply think they should be in line with income taxes or simply not exist at all.

And cutting expenses/raising income:

Cut expenses. So much waste, and so many ineffectual redundant agencies and programs that we're better off without.

………… parent

Corporate taxation

As long as corporations are people, I demand they be taxed accordingly. It'd be much better to simply eliminate corporate personhood, but I'll take what I can get.

Wine magazine gives award of excellence to phony restaurant

This is pretty funny, unless you happen to be Wine Spectator magazine.

As part of the research for an academic paper I’m currently working on about standards for wine awards, I submitted an application for a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. I named the restaurant “Osteria L’Intrepido” (a play on the name of a restaurant guide series that I founded, Fearless Critic). I submitted the fee ($250), a cover letter, a copy of the restaurant’s menu (a fun amalgamation of somewhat bumbling nouvelle-Italian recipes), and a wine list.

Osteria L’Intrepido won the Award of Excellence, as published in print in the August 2008 issue of Wine Spectator. (Not surprisingly, the Osteria’s listing has since been removed from Wine Spectator’s website.) I presented this result at the meeting of the American Association of Wine Economists in Portland, Oregon, on Friday, August 15.

Moore placed on Ohio ballot

I know not everyone is a minor party/ballot access nerd like me, but the Socialist Party's candidate for President was ordered to be placed on the Ohio ballot today.

Apparently the Green Party will also be suing for party access since the Libertarians and Socialists were able to do so.

Until recently in Ohio, minor party candidates had to petition as independents. These cases require the state to put the party name next to the candidate's name on the ballot.

libertarians vs. socialists?

Oh why oh why couldn't our national paradigm be so simple....

Now that'd be a debate

It'd make for interesting debates on economics (they generally are the same on social/moral policy).

Nader once said that the difference between the Democrats and Republicans wasn't substance but style. They generally agree on quite a bit, but have different ideas regarding implementation.

I'd love to see a debate between a hard-core free marketer like Paul or Barr against an actual dyed-in-the-wool socialist like Moore. You couldn't even get them to accept the other's premises. I think it'd hearken back to the Buckley v. Chomsky debates that were so interesting.

Susan Eisenhour kisses Bush/Rove/McCain GOP Good-Bye

She had planned on working with old colleagues to reshape the GOP ,

McCain/Bush handling of in the crises in Georgia was the last straw, putting politics before National Security once again.

My decision came at the end of last week when it was demonstrated to the nation that McCain and this Bush White House have learned little in the last five years. They mishandled what became a crisis in the Caucusus, and this has undermined U.S. national security. At the same time, the McCain camp appears to be comfortable with running an unworthy Karl Rove–style political campaign.

It is the economy, stupid.

"I like Ike"

As an independent I want to be free of the constraints and burdens that have come with trying to make my own views explainable in the context of today’s party. Hijacked by a relatively small few, the GOP of today bears no resemblance to Lincoln, Roosevelt or Eisenhower’s party...

Ouch...scathing world choice to say the least.

It is possible that Susan Eisenhower has a unique POV on Russia, due to her living arrangements.

The little covered story

of good old Republicans, like my dad, who aren't that partisan, but are somewhat more conservative, ala Susan Eisenhour.

The little known story of how many Republican women are in fact pro-choice, and how many Republicans are in fact disgusted with the GOP.

Some say that the Bush family, starting with George Sr. is responsible for the tone in politics these days. Reagan wasn't into fear and smear.

I expect the tone to get much worse. Interesting that even *gasp* Fox News refused the independently funded ad that Red_Wing linked to with glee. Could it be.... is it possible..... that Fox News turning down an anti-Obama ad, is actually a sign of hope? :-) I dare to dream.

LOL! Probably you should focus on...

...solving the major fractures in your own party before you worry about us!

Wow..news from A LONG TIME AGO?

She's backed Obama all year?

She's married to a Russian Scientist?

What a surprising development?

Her business, her very livelihood is built on us having a relationship with Russia. And we'd be happy to, if they would simply stop invading their neighbors, killing it population, and destroying its infrastructure!

House counts, off hand quotes, and now this, you're having a hard time with this aren't you?

I understand, trying to defend Obama...LOL...must require you to grasp at every straw you see...?

Yawn.

Veep speculation

Just for fun......

I hope Obama picks Joe Biden. I hope I am not disappointed.

Young (six and three quarters) capitalists outside of Bayh's home in Indiana are selling loads of lemonade to hot thirsty reporters and camera crew. That's too cute.

Since Obama hasn't yet made the announcement, I predict it won't happen until tomorrow morning.

The Ses

I'm hoping he picks Sebelius or Schweitzer. Obama can persuade me to vote for him if he picks either.

Bayh, Biden, et al. solidify my vote for Nader.
