Now that former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has resigned, the legislature is trying to decide who will succeed him . The former President may face criminal charges, including treason.

An Al-Qaeda affiliate is responsible for a bombing in Algeria that killed at least 43 people . The suicide bomber drove a car into a police academy where people were registering for classes.

What else is exciting today?

Edit: Ballot Access News is reporting that the Independent Party of Virginia has gathered 70,000 signatures for a Bloomberg/Paul ticket . Virginia law allows for any petitioner to put anyone on the ballot, but then gives the candidates a chance to withdraw. So far, both Bloomberg and Paul have put out statements suggesting that they will not withdraw on the Virginia ballot. This could be a huge development since Virginia is a swing state this year.

Obama spanks McCain in speech before the VFW today:

"Speaking To Veterans, Obama Directly Takes On McCain's Attacks On His Patriotism: From the prepared remarks:

But one of the things that we have to change in this country is the idea that people can't disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism. I have never suggested that Senator McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America's national interest. Now, it's time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same.

Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country. I love America, so do you, and so does John McCain. When I look out at this audience, I see people of different political views. You are Democrats and Republicans and Independents. But you all served together, and fought together, and bled together under the same proud flag. You did not serve a Red America or a Blue America -- you served the United States of America.

So let's have a serious debate, and let's debate our disagreements on the merits of policy -- not personal attacks. And no matter how heated it gets or what kind of campaign he chooses to run, I will honor Senator McCain's service, just like I honor the service of every veteran in this room, and every American who has worn the uniform of the United States."

Wow. Watch the Keith Olbermann's Special Comment on John McCain and his campaign managers. Now we're talking.

Self fulfilling prophecies

Sometimes it really seems like we've been living in a classic greek tragedy the last 8 years:

An eight-month McClatchy investigation of the detention system created after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has found that the U.S. imprisoned innocent men, subjected them to abuse, stripped them of their legal rights and allowed Islamic militants to turn the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba into a school for jihad.

Find the articles here.

A few highlights-

1) From "we got the wrong men":

Mohammed Akhtiar was among the more than 770 terrorism suspects imprisoned at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. They are the men the Bush administration described as "the worst of the worst."

But Akhtiar was no terrorist. American troops had dragged him out of his Afghanistan home in 2003 and held him in Guantanamo for three years in the belief that he was an insurgent involved in rocket attacks on U.S. forces. But they had the wrong guy. Local anti-government insurgents had fed false information to U.S. troops.

An eight-month McClatchy investigation in 11 countries on three continents has found that Akhtiar was one of dozens of men — and, according to several officials, perhaps hundreds — whom the U.S. has wrongfully imprisoned in Afghanistan, Cuba and elsewhere on the basis of flimsy or fabricated evidence, old personal scores or bounty payments.

2) From "I guess you can call it torture":

KABUL, Afghanistan — American soldiers herded the detainees into holding pens of razor-sharp concertina wire, as if they were corralling livestock.

The guards kicked, kneed and punched many of the men until they collapsed in pain. U.S. troops shackled and dragged other detainees to small isolation rooms, then hung them by their wrists from chains dangling from the wire mesh ceiling.

Former guards and detainees whom McClatchy interviewed said Bagram was a center of systematic brutality for at least 20 months, starting in late 2001. Yet the soldiers responsible have escaped serious punishment.

3) From "Due process is legal mumbo jumbo":

WASHINGTON — The framework under which detainees were imprisoned for years without charges at Guantanamo and in many cases abused in Afghanistan wasn't the product of American military policy or the fault of a few rogue soldiers.

It was largely the work of five White House, Pentagon and Justice Department lawyers who, following the orders of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, reinterpreted or tossed out the U.S. and international laws that govern the treatment of prisoners in wartime, according to former U.S. defense and Bush administration officials.

...

The quintet of lawyers, who called themselves the “War Council," drafted legal opinions that circumvented the military's code of justice, the federal court system and America's international treaties in order to prevent anyone — from soldiers on the ground to the president — from being held accountable for activities that at other times have been considered war crimes.

The Hague. It's what these bastards deserve in full measure.

Question for the Group:

Who are the wealthy?

Apparently, there are only like a couple hundred of them in the country if you talk to the average person, when I think it's heckuva lot more. I see euphemisms like "upper middle class" now that doesn't make much since to me. You're either in the middle (Mid 50%) or you're not.

So I'm just curious of what you all consider to be rich. I guess I should go first:

I consider "wealthy" to be when your income+investments+other assets significantly exceed your expenses. And by "significant" I'd say enough wealth so that if you were to lose a major income source you can still make enough money to live comfortably.

If I was working for the government, maybe $250,000+ for a family, and $500,000 in profits or more if you own a small business. Just curious.

The income amounts have to be adjusted to the zip code.

I think we all can attest that some area's have a much greater cost of living than others.

For instance, if you live in the Bay Area (n cal) in order to own a home you have to be making $150,000+ a year to even crack into a crappy home. Out where I live you can make less for a similar house. I feel badly about being able to afford stuff till I talk to my brother & sister in NYC.

Rough takes for Northern Cal (per year income) though:

Middle class (single) - $25,000 to $80,000 per year (couple is double)
Higher class (single) - $80,000 & up (couple is double)
The Truly Rich (single) - $400,000 & up (couple is double).

But I'm open to changing those figures some.

It is a tricky question

But there's a decent discussion here.

My take away position was that the rich:
1) have access to wealth far greater than that of the median wage worker
2) most likely derive a significant portion of their income from investments rather than labor

I define "rich"

as anyone who makes more money than me. :-)

Seriously, because of my background and the low cost of living in the areas in which I've lived, I have a hard time believing anyone who makes more than six figures isn't rich. As I've written before, making $50,000/yr where I'm from is well off. Obviously, the logical portion of my brain says otherwise and it has to depend on where one lives.

Certainly anyone who is under retirement age that makes more money from capital gains than from labor is considered rich by me, regardless of their income.

A universal maximum is $500,000/yr. The universal minimum is $150,000/yr.

Who will rid me of this troublesome Foreign Policy?

Neo-con policies have left the world littered with unneeded messes, Georgia among them. From Eunomia:

This might be an appropriate time to reflect on the exploitation of U.S. allies during 2002-03 and during the war in Iraq. New and aspiring NATO members were particularly susceptible to the combination of arm-twisting and enticements that Washington used to get the heads of government from so-called “New Europe” to declare their support for an invasion of Iraq, but perhaps most tragic and inexcusable of all of these cases is Georgia. While a boon to contractors, Georgia’s significant increases in military spending diverted resources in a poor country to building up the armed forces, an investment as misguided as it is now wasted. To make itself an attractive candidate, the Georgian government had to demonstrate its eagerness to be out of Russia’s shadow, which inevitably involved confrontational posturing and actions that riled Moscow into increasingly punitive and often excessive responses. In the twisted establishment view, to be pro-Western in the former Soviet states is first and foremost to be impeccably anti-Russian, which would be ridiculed as counterproductive nationalist bluster anywhere else but serves as a useful barometer of how willing a population is to be used as a pawn against the Russians. The gradual realization by those who live in the country being used as a pawn that their country is being used this way naturally inspires resentment.

Heck of a job, as always. Heck of a job.

Naturally there's just no chance that a people who feel they've been betrayed to their enemies by the US might cause us trouble in the future. Nah.

The Labor Department reported that wholesale prices shot up 1.2

percent in July. Wholesale inflation surged in July, leaving prices for the past year rising at the fastest pace in 27 years, according to government data released Tuesday.

Core prices, which exclude food and energy, rose 0.7 percent. That increase was the biggest since November 2006 and more than triple the 0.2 percent rise in core prices that had been expected.

In other economic news, the Commerce Department reported that housing construction fell in July to the lowest pace in more than 17 years. Builders broke ground on 965,000 housing units at a seasonally adjusted annual rate last month — the weakest showing since March 1991 — as the housing industry continues to struggle with falling sales and rising mortgage foreclosures.

The bad news on wholesale prices followed a report last week that consumer prices shot up by 0.8 percent in July, leaving consumer inflation rising at the fastest pace since 1991.

It's not good but it's not as bad as the 80's....yet.
