[Update] They keep claiming there is a cease fire, but the Russian tanks keep on advancing. Nice!
Georgia says Russia still attacking - despite Russia's proclamations of a halt to military operations.
BTW, following our swimmer Phelps is pretty amazing - he is well on track for the record 8 gold medals in Beijing. He seems head and shoulders above the competition.

Americans still make some stuff well.
Americans. We're good at it. Not as good as the Chinese, but give the religious right more power and we'll get there.
*sigh*
Guess who.
No, go on and guess.
If you said the Government's head of law enforcement, you'd be right.
It pains me that i have to point this out, but yes, Virginia, every "violation of the law" is in fact a crime. That's how we &^%$ing define "crime," in fact.
Now Mukasey could try arguing that not every crime is worth prosecuting. That argument would come across as conveniently self serving since the crime in question is one committed by, you know, his boss, but at least it has coherence.
His current argument lives smack on the corner of Gonzales and Goodling lane. It's a lovely flat with hot and cold running semantics and windowsill gardens full of rationalizations in bloom.

I couldn't have said it better
In fact the statement "Every violation of the law is a crime" is a tautology.
Mukasey's statement is that the violation was not one of criminal law, therefore he will not prosecute. I don't know the relevant statutes to be able to offer a retort to that line of thinking, but certainly it would be a civil matter if not a criminal one.
Needless to say, if this isn't a violation of any criminal statutes, then it had very well better become a violation.

When the taxman cometh, most corporations wave him on by,
according to a government study released on Tuesday.
"About two-thirds of U.S. companies and foreign firms doing business in this country paid no federal income taxes from 1998 to 2005, according to a study by the Government Accountability Office...To be sure, many of the nonpayers were small or new companies that probably made no money. But the report said that about a quarter of large corporations - ones that had more than $250 million in assets or $50 million in gross receipts - paid no taxes. In 2005, for instance, 3,565 large U.S. companies and 998 large foreign-owned companies operating here did not pay any income taxes.
But corporations can do a lot of creative accounting to "lose" money. One such practice identified by the report is "transfer pricing abuse." Essentially, that means shuffling money among corporate subsidiaries by charging pumped-up fees for goods and services instead of market-rate "arms-length" prices. "A company will incorporate offshore where there are no taxes," he said. "That (parent) company charges the U.S. company lots of money for things like the trademark for the company logo. The U.S. company says, 'I made $50 million, but my stupid parent company charged me $50 million for the logo.' The U.S. company gets to deduct the royalty fees as an expense and move profits to the parent company offshore in a tax-free haven."
I myself don't want to soak the rich, but I would like them to actually pay taxes. Because if they don't, guess who gets to pay off bush43's $1 Trillion debt? Yep....you and me.
Tax fairly and make them pay. Allowing those who have more money to pay less or nothing is immoral. Funny how some don't think morality applies to tax paying.
Speaking as a Corporation
I'm always very happy NOT to pay any income tax, or just a minimal amount, at the end of the year. Ideally, a well run small business will spend all its income on salaries, benefits, or other such items unless capital improvements (i.e. increases in value that one pays taxes upon) are needed.
I'd rather pay my employees a higher salary or a nice year-end bonus than give the money to the government. And, realistically, any taxes I do pay have to be factored into the prices I charge, just like any other expense does.
So as such, the number used above ("2/3") is kind of misleading, making it sound pretty awful, like all businesses are getting away with something. Those with lawyers and CPAs probably do, through misleading schemes and bending the rules --- such as that very small subset of 3565 you mentioned, which is nothing like 2/3 of all businesses in the US.

Study: Iraq security contractors no bargain.
Military contracts in the Iraq theater have cost taxpayers at least $85 billion, and when it comes to providing security, they might not be any cheaper than using military personnel, according to a report released Tuesday.
"About 20 percent of funding for operations in Iraq has gone to contractors, the report said... Since the end of the Cold War, the military has relied more heavily on contractors as it reduced the size of its force... Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, which requested the CBO review, said the Bush administration's reliance on military contractors has set a dangerous precedent.
The use of contractors "restricts accountability and oversight; opens the door to corruption and abuse; and, in some instances, may significantly increase the cost to American taxpayers."
here's the really sad part. This shrinkage of the Government isn't occurring along with a reduction of the budget. That is what some have claimed to want for years now. here we have many of those very same people, now setting this up so that it is private corporations who use the government as their personal ATM machine. And yet these very same people still claim to be against federal spending and the government.
I'd say they were speaking out of both sides of their mouth and we're all paying for the privilege.
Move to Detroit, buy $1 house
So a House sold for $1
in Detroit. What's more alarming is the story is it took 19days to sell, and on top of that..thieves are very desperate there:
Detroit seems to be where NYC was in the 1970s, except this time there seems to be no hope in sight.

There are houses in the shadier parts of east Cleveland (and East Cleveland) that routinely sell for under $5000.
Have a look
for yourself. In fact, based on Trulia's data, the average sale price of an East Cleveland house is nearing $10,000.

Don't get too excited
East Cleveland isn't exactly Corvallis or wherever it is that you live:
The median income for a household in the city was $20,542, and the median income for a family was $26,053. Males had a median income of $26,123 versus $21,960 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,602. About 28.0% of families and 32.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 45.5% of those under age 18 and 22.5% of those age 65 or over.
It's hardly a thriving community.

I understand
it's just frustrating. I make a decent salary. I don't live in NYC or San Francisco. Hell I don't even live inside actual Portland. And yet there's just no way I can get into a house that's much more than a cardboard box with a mortgage.
I know I don't want to live in Cleveland. I just want have a home for my family.

No one wants to live in Cleveland
It's ridiculous how much houses cost, especially on the west coast.
The place I rent now is appraised at about $75,000. I live on one side of the house, which is a "split double" of sorts. I don't know what the other side pays in rent, but I assume it's the same since both units are 2/1. I pay $500/mo. I could easily get a loft down the street for $400 if I wanted to, but the ex wanted a larger place when we were picking stuff out. It seems if this place were sitting in Orange County, it'd go for something like $300,000.
Studios in Akron are looking to set me back around $375.

That's amazing
I'm just about speechless.
I suppose that's one thing where us Midwesterners are different from the rest of the country. I'm from places where making $40,000/yr is considered well-off and anything over six figures is set for life.

Speaking of weird news
huh.
Among the weird details of mad cow disease sperm quarantines what I find truly remarkable is this woman's apparently strong desire to have the exact same donor provide the DNA to her second child. Not someone with traits she likes, or even similar traits to the original donor but the exact same donor.
In her own words, speaking about her first child:
I just find this remarkable. I wouldn't expect the kind of person who is willing to use a surrogate sperm donor in the first place to put much or any stock in the idea of being a "full" sibling. Seems an odd contrast of very modern reproductive sensibilities with very traditional views of family bonds.

Ohio election law quirk
The ORP is a bit upset about a quirk in the election laws
that allow for same day registration and voting. The article is light on details, but my unhealthy fascination with Ohio election law can fill in the cracks.
In Ohio anyone can vote before November 4 by requesting an absentee ballot. These ballots must be available by law 35 days before the election. Ohio law also stipulates that voters must register 30 days before any election. That implies a 5-day window where someone can register 30 days before the election and get an absentee ballot the same day. Absentee ballots can be filled out at the local board of election and are not required to be taken home or mailed in. This would effectively create same-day registration in Ohio.

It's funny
These are probably many of the same people who think a mandatory waiting period to buy a gun is an unconstitutional abomination, yet they are up in arms about getting to vote without a waiting period. Doesn't seem to jive.
