Wednesday/Thursday Open Thread
[Thursday] I see our own skymutt is successfully feeding into the alarmist frenzy over at dkos :)
Karl "Turdblossom" Rove was found to be in contempt of Congress by the Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote of 20-14. Rove is wanted for questioning about the AG firing scandal of 2007 as well as the purportedly political prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Seigelman. And no, I didn't mean to be alliterative.
The Justice Department has concluded that top aides to former AG Alberto Gonzales illegally used partisan affiliation and political concerns to determine the hiring of subordinate attorneys. It is unclear whether any criminal charges will be filed, but since none of the aides implicated in the report still work for the Justice Department, no internal disciplinary measures can be made.

Comments :
Hypocrisy....I think that pisses me off more than the positions
politicians take. My latest flare up was Senator Brownbacks press release yesterday that he is outraged that China may monitor the internet use of hotel guests in Beijing for the Olympics
:
"We don't put the hardware and software on hotels. If there is a targeted individual that seems to be a likely prospect of terrorists, they must go through the FISA court and ask for a court to determine that there is probable cause to be able to listen in on that information."
Unless of course you are the bush43 Administration where Brownback kisses your slimy ass so you can completely bypass the FISA courts and install the evesdropping hardware directly to the telcoms main link-up points. I mean....wtf was Brownback thinking here anyhow? Does he really think that what the Chinese are doing is any different than what his patron Saint & Savior dubya is doing? Jeez, go figure!
Unfortunately the contempt "charge"
is merely a recommendation from the committee. The full house would have to vote on it to give it even the appearance of teeth. That would require Pelosi to stand up to the GOP on something.

For some time
I've played around with this idea-
specifically the concept that a representative body that exclusively belongs to the uppermost socio-economic strata can't possibly represent the actual population at large.
I think that may be the real diversity challenge at this point. The commonality in terms of demographics about the powerful isn't race or creed. It's just wealth.
I came. I saw. I posted.

Anybody who can identify designer clothes on sight is an elitist
If you can tell Ferragamo shoes on sight from a copycat pair from some offbrand at Kohls, you've spent time in a shoe store that sells Ferragamo shoes, and that makes you an elitist in my book. Me, I've never knowingly been in the same room as a pair of Ferragamo shoes and thus am a pure and regular American.
I will also say that I've seen McCain wear a lot of clothes that look like what my dad wears, particulary the khaki colored zippered jackets that he wears in cool weather. My dad's a depression baby who scoffs at anything with even a hint of high class to it. So, if that's a designer jacket, I'll eat a horseshoe.

And a conservative actually shot a few liberals. I can then assume all conservatives want to shoot liberals.
And you linked to Fox News! Double fail!
As the link indicates, the statue of limitations has gone into effect. Why there is a statute of limitations on animal cruelty, I have no clue.
I have absolutely no problem with hunting for food because wild animals live a much fuller life than factory farmed animals. In fact, I prefer people kill their own food rather than buy it at the supermarket. As long a substantial part of the animal is going to be used for clothing and food, I don't have a problem However, hunting simply to kill things should be a felony. Most respectable hunters follow this as an unwritten law, but there are some who don't.
I never broke the law; I am the law! --
George W. BushJudge DreddI'm listening to...
That's an old story. And the locals say the hog was domestic,
not wild.
Doesn't take much hunting skill or guts to kill a domesticated pig. Even one that big.
The pig played with grandkids...
The hog was a pet of the old owner and wasn't wild and wasn't even feral. Fox News quoting inaccurate sources: "The Anniston Star reported that the feral hog was weighed at the Clay County Farmer's Exchange in Lineville."
The father of the boy let his kid kill a pet. The father seemed to have "thought" it was feral, because killing feral animals was the only legal way to "hunt" the pig.
Not to mention there is no evidence the death threat in GR's article came from a "liberal" its far more likely its some 15 year boy with a computer and an internet connection.

The obvious reason that retailers are going under is the increased cost of transportation caused by high fuel prices which, also obviously, is the creation of Democrat policies against drilling for more oil to meet the demand!
So even if your observation is correct, it is the Democrat's fault!

A slashdot post
this was in response to someone who also faulted Democrats for high gas prices
I mean do you really think Exxon is going to sell domestically at below market price because they have some sense of patriotism? Oil goes to the highest bidder.
If we'd have opened up all the land for drilling 10 years ago at what price do you think oil would be? The only person you can fault for high gas prices is God for not creating enough dinosaurs.
I never broke the law; I am the law! --
George W. BushJudge DreddI'm listening to...
Hey don't blame me on drilling, I'm working on it!
I've been pro-exploration and pro-drilling since way before it became the Republican's one and only campaign issue with any shred of legitimacy, and put have worked to change hearts and minds on the issue by pointing out the benefits of drilling which might appeal to the sensibilities of Democrats (jobs, tax and fee income to the government which can be invested in priorities like infrastructure and education etc.)
I think there's plenty of blame to go around though. Let's look at this Republican administration's record:
--Bush wanted to play commander in chief in the Middle East, and as a result he has shipped enormous amounts of our nation's wealth over to Iraq where it has gone down a rathole.
--His spendthrift policies here at home, including sending out two rounds of borrowed money to the American People in the form of "stimulus checks" so that he could be the good guy while our future was being mortgaged in piles of debt, are coming home to roost in the form of the collapse of the value of the dollar.
--He had to be the good guy on taxes also, slashing taxes while the deficit skyrocketed because he couldn't say no.
--He had to be the good guy to the government bureaucracy also, unable to say no to outrageous new expenditures, time and time again spending money like a drunken sailor. As a side note, we have gotten all-time low ROI on our record government spending because all the unqualified, ineffective cronies and partisan hacks that have been put in charge of government.
--He wanted to be able to say that there was record home ownership in America so he could look like a hero, and so he let the mortgage industry run amok when the plain facts screamed for tighter standards.
--And now he can't say no to Wall Street, and we are seeing bailout after bailout after bailout.
Bush has been bad for the economy on so many levels it boggles the mind.
And who voted for him, two times? Why, that would be you and your ilk.

The red bar was just temporary, partly to protest "Democrat" unwillingness to compromise for the sake of needed action on energy. I tell you what, this group will join the previous Republican Congress as one of the all time most ineffective in history. If it weren't for flashes of brilliance from Obama now and then, I'd be seriously down in the dumps politcally-speaking. Even Barack is way too conventional for my tastes on domestic policy. Can you believe he favors ANOTHER round of stimulus checks

Blame away on Reid and Pelosi
Won't hurt my feelings none. It goes deeper than that though. It goes all the way up and down the aisles on both sides, in both houses.
It's time for another "throw em all out" movement. There's a couple that would I'd miss (Jeff Flake, John Lewis, Russ Feingold, Kent Conrad, Ron Wyden), but when the overall result is so pitiful a house cleaning in order.
The American People need to take a long hard look in the mirror too. We are soft. The world at large is eating our lunch.
Obama is one of the few glimmers of light I see, and even there, I only see it sometimes, like when he swiftly took out the grinning demagogue that was Reverend Wright following his devastatingly excellent speech on race. Or when he had the integrity to side with Tom Coburn on earmarks because it was the right thing to do, regardless of what differences there were on other issues. Or sometimes it's been just those forgotten moments during an answer session at a picnic, the ones where he really tells it like it is. So I refuse to believe he's become one of the Washington Pod People quite yet. Sure, when he comes out and say in a robot voice "Must. Send. More. Stimulus. Checks.", I get a little concerned that he is a member of the Washington Undead like all the rest, but I have to cling to something, don't I?

But interestingly enough, instead of finding ways to address the energy issues hurting the American people, (that the Democrats have created to begin with by denying any attempts to build any new energy infrastructure in America for 20 years), Democrats went on vacation last night, they went on vacation for 5 weeks, while the Republicans are still there, YES, they are still there in session even as Nancy Pelosi and her cronies ar lying on a beach or schilling a book somewhere!
But, the good old liberals don't care, they just want to impeach GW, as Kucinich has been blabbering about, or now impeach Karl Rove as The People For The American Way is trying to make a stink about.

I doubt very much if I fit that image.
The Congress voted to end the session. The Republicans decided to stay and make a fuss.
"The talk-in was more spontaneous than planned. Mike, R-Ind., said that as the House’s regular session neared its end Friday morning, he and Price were talking about staging more than 100 five-minute special order speeches when Price said that if the House adjourned, “We should just stay.’’"

Why are they "Bashing" the Dem's?
"A society that puts equality before freedom will have neither. A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both." ~ Milton Friedman
And?
It's a scheduled vacation. Republicans (well at least conservatives) usually like when Congress isn't in session because less laws can be made.
Republicans are not "still there in session" because the House is not in session. If a majority so chooses they can show up on the 3rd of January, swear everyone in and then adjourn for the rest of the year.
If this was the other way around, you'd be the first to talk about the Democrats' wining. The whole charade is nothing but a publicity stunt. It's a good publicity stunt because it exploits the fact that most Americans don't understand the parliamentary procedure in the House nor the accepted powers of the Speaker, but it's a stunt nonetheless.
Oh and if only we could impeach W. I'll be for impeaching him long after he's out of office and long after he's dead. I'd rather not have to leave it up to the ICC to prosecute him, but I'll take that as well if we can't clean our own house.

I don't have a party
I'm registered independent. Well, in Ohio you can't actually register as independent, but you can fail to register in a party. I failed to register as either a Democrat or Republican in the most recent primary.
Republicans and Blue Dogs can sign a discharge petition to get any bill out of committee and on the floor. Seeing that you're a committeeman, I'll assume you already know this. If Republicans can't get a majority of votes to even get a bill onto the floor, then they certainly can't get a majority to pass it.
And again, as I'm sure you already know, majority leaders regularly hold bills that have popular support. Is it right? No. But it regularly happens. You act as if the Democrats invented this. In the Senate a minority can keep bills from being voted upon. Again, this is standard procedure. Again, you know this but you're being deliberately obtuse in order to play the victim and cast the Democrats as abusing their majority power.
If you're really upset that pieces of legislation that have majority support but cannot be voted upon for reasons of parliamentary procedure, you should take a look at the many filibusters this session of your own party. But I know you aren't, which is why I know you're being deliberately obtuse.
We all welcome more Republican/conservative voices to SC, but I hope your recent posts are not representative of those to come. Shameless partisanship is usually frowned upon around here.

So you want justice huh? You might consider this...
Whereas: Senator Barack Obama is an admitted illegal drug user and
is believed to have used illegal drugs as recently as November 1999
or more recently. Mr. Obama has maintained contact with other
admitted illegal drug users.
Whereas: Senator Barack Obama has maintained regular contact
with known criminals such as Antoin (Tony) Rezko and other
criminal elements in Chicago and Illinois. Mr. Obama has
conducted business with these criminals and received campaign
donations from them. Mr. Obama was compelled to return an estimated $250,000 in
donations related to Tony Rezko
.
Whereas: Senator Barack Obama has consistently lied about his
contact with convicted criminal Tony Rezko. The Tony Rezko
corruption trial revealed that FBI mole John Thomas helped investigators
"build a record of repeat visits to the old offices of Rezko and former
business partner Daniel Mahru's Rezmar Corp., at 853 N. Elston, by
Blagojevich and Obama during 2004 and 2005," according to the February
10, 2008 Chicago Sun-Times.
Whereas: Senator Barack Obama has engaged in unscrupulous business
practices, in particular with Mr. Robert Blackwell. Mr. Obama
received an $ 8,000 per month "legal retainer" from Mr. Blackwell
for a total of $112,000 and reported the income through his law firm
in a manner not unlike money laundering. Obama, along with Obama
campaign manager Dan Shomon, procured $ 320,000 in state grants
for Blackwell's company Killerspin. Blackwell companies contributed
over $ 32,000 to the Obama campaign in 2007.
Whereas: Senator Barack Obama used the office of IL Senator to
facilitate the vote rigging in Chicago as chairman of the Illinois Senate
Health and Human Services Committee. Mr. Obama pushed legislation in Senate Bill
1332 to reduce the number of members of the Health Facilities Planning Board
from 15 to 9. Mr. Obama did conspire with Stuart Levine, Tony Rezko and
Rod Blogojevich to rig the committee and was rewarded with campaign
contributions. The new members appointed included 3 doctors who contributed to
Mr. Obama. On April 21, 2004, Stuart Levine explicitly advised Dr. Robert Weinstein,
who is now indicted, of Tony Rezko's role in manipulating the Planning Board's vote.
Whereas: Senator Barack Obama has engaged in lies and deception
about his past. Mr. Obama lied about his contact level with
convicted criminal Tony Rezko, the amounts and sources of
campaign contributions and encounters with the law. A complaint
has been filed with the Bar Association of Illinois alleging
that Mr. Obama did not answer truthfully all questions on the
application to the bar.
Whereas: Senator Barack Obama has invoked the FOIA in Illinois
when it was politically expedient and ignored or violated the
FOIA at other times. In the Illinois Senate proceedings of
Mr. Obama, in Senate Bill 1416, pleads the importance of businesses
bidding on state contracts having improved access to FOIA data. When
later questioned about his records during his term in the IL
Senate, Mr. Obama gave evasive answers or refused to supply records.
Whereas: The First Amendment provides a right for the people "to
petition the government for a redress of grievances." Precedents
exist for impeachment and expulsion of a US Senator. Senator William
Blount was impeached by the House on July 7, 1797 and expelled by
the Senate the next day.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the People, Undersigned,
being citizens of the United States and residents in the Cities and States so
indicated, HEREBY Demand that the Congress of the United States begin
immediate impeachment and/or expulsion proceedings against Senator
Barack Obama.
