So yesterday while I'm at work my wife is taking care of my kids. They're at the apartment and they hear this really loud yowling from outside that goes on long enough that she gets concerned and goes to see what's going on. She finds a very young kitten- in the dumpster. Now this kitten can actually climb pretty good but isn't much of a walker. It's possible that he ended up in the garbage by accident, but my anti-faith in humanity isn't leading me to consider that a high likelyhood.
She was especially pissed because our garbage area is right next to the garages used by the maintenance staff who are in and out all the time. They evidently didn't give a damn about the yowling (and there's no way they wouldn't have heard it considering our apartment is on the third floor and across the street and she said it was loud).
Not long after she brought the kitten in, the dumpster got picked up for compacting. I have to wonder if they would have just continued to ignore the kitten for that too.
Now I generally like animals but I can understand euthenasia. Sometimes it is really best. Sometimes it sucks but it is the only practical choice. But tossing a kitten in a dumpster to starve or be slowly crushed to death? What the ^%$# is wrong with people and how many sharp or blunt implements do I need to fix it?
Odds are I have a new cat now permanently. Fortunately our current cat, Clover, is very friendly towards other kitties:

I'm thinking about naming him Lebowski, and calling him "the Dude."

The Dude abides.

this is my own spin on catblogging, as started by Kevin Drum at Washington Monthly.
Anyone is welcome to join in. And no it doesn't have to be quite as dark as mine. Most catblogging falls more on the Cuteoverload end of the Cute<-->Russian Poetry scale.

Yeah, people suck
There's certainly a double standard with how we expect "pet" animals to be treated versus other animals, of course... but that's a separate issue.
That's an awfully cute series of pictures with the kitty and your cat.

Sorry I missed this diary until now.
Kudos to you and your wife.
I share your sentiments regarding whoever dumped the kitten and all those who ignored him.
And those pics are both heartwarming and (because of the aforementioned a**holes) infuriating.
