any predictions for today?

I think Obama wins 56-44% in NC, and Clinton wins 54-46% in IN...

Which means Clinton will stay in the race.

I concur..+ Stephen King's Stupidity

Your numbers seem reasonable--Obama by double-digits in NC, Clinton by 7-8pts in Indiana. And the Democratic death march continues..

Meanwhile, I nominate Stephen King for the "John F. Kerry Smug Liberal Stupidity Achievement Award":

I don't want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV, but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don't, then you've got, the Army, Iraq, I don't know, something like that. It's, it's not as bright. So, that's my little commercial for that.

You may not agree with what he says, but you'll defend to the death his right to say it.

I really like the "on this day" addition

I'm guessing Obama in NC by 9 and Clinton in Indiana by 7.

I wonder what the political implications of this tragedy are for the military.

They weren't white, western, and/or wealthy

so the political implications are moot.

9/11 killed less than 3000. How much you want to bet that ten, and maybe twenty, times that many poor brown people dying won't recieve even .1% of the media coverage?

I meant for the military in Myanmar

I should have been more clear.

I guess it depends on whether they can exploit the instability or whether it will fuel perceptions that they don't really care about or protect the people.

No more troops

Slate has short piece examining what Army resources we might have to send to Afghanistan. The answer: none. At least not unless we want to pull troops from Iraq or one of our other commitments. We simply have no spare troops.

This is a topic looked at before. Notonly is Iraq exspensive and dangerous with no hope of success as described by the stated mission objectives, but it is also hobbling our ability to use force throughout the world.

What happens if Fannie May & Freddie Mac go under?

Today's NY Times writes that Doubts Raised on Big Backers of Mortgages favicon:

"As home prices continue their free fall and banks shy away from lending, Washington officials have increasingly relied on two giant mortgage companies — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — to keep the housing market afloat...But some financial experts worry that the companies are dangerously close to the edge, especially if home prices go through another steep decline. Their combined cushion of $83 billion — the capital that their regulator requires them to hold — underpins a colossal $5 trillion in debt and other financial commitments."

I supported Fannie & Freddie being able to take higher priced mortgages, especially since the limits that had been in place ($417,000 or something) pretty much took a lot of the houses that middle class folks buy here in CA off the table. What I don't support was having Freddie & Fannie buy up all the bad paper that was written by the Mortgage Industry and eat the loss, essentially having the government give them a free pass.

And then to top it off, this mornings NPR had a report on it where they said Countrywide is still pressuring mortgage buyers to lie on their applications in order to get loans. favicon

If Corporations are going to pull crap, they have to eat it when the time comes. I really get pissed that Big Business wants to privatize all profits and have the government eat all the risk and bad decisions that Big Business makes. That comes out of MY TAXES thank you very much (well, your too).

…………

It makes perfect sense though

If Corporations are going to pull crap, they have to eat it when the time comes. I really get pissed that Big Business wants to privatize all profits and have the government eat all the risk and bad decisions that Big Business makes.

I agree this is wrong, but it is extremely predictable because the motivation has never been about the philosophy. It's about greed. Consequently anytime that business may act in violation of capitalist principles and make a profit or gain a competitive edge, they do. They seek to create monopolies, they try to distort market forces to aid themselves, they seek government subsidies and bail outs- all in direct violation of capitalist principle.

Same problem as communism. It only works if everyone genuinely agrees to it, but communists and capitalists try to put their theories into practice without unanimous consent. My vision of Anarchism also requires people to consent, the difference is I'm not trying to force it on people who clearly aren't interested.

Joe Wilson on Obama

Former Ambassador Joe Wilson (husband of outed CIA agent Valerie Plame) has a huffington post post about Obama called "Legitimate Questions of Judgment, Experience."

His critique seems mostly fair, although I'd prefer he left the Wright stuff out, as it seems trivial to me at least. What worries me is the way he is savaged by Obama supporters in the comments.

I didn't realize that Archbishop Peter Akinola who leads the

conservative split off Episcopal Church (and the Nigerian Church) had so many Wrightisms in his recent past.

Apparently in 2006:

"The Washington Post calling attention to proposed Nigerian legislation (here, on page 12) supported by Akinola that –interpreted as narrowly as possible—would have significantly curtailed the rights of gays, lesbians and their supporters to speak about their lives in public, assemble or practice their religion. Interpreted more broadly, language that aimed at stopping any displays of same-sex affection, public or private, direct or indirect, was a prescription for home invasion.
One of the more objectionable clauses in this legislation reads:
Any person who is involved in the registration of gay clubs, societies and organizations, sustenance, procession or meetings, publicity and public show of same sex amorous relationship directly or indirectly in public and in private is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a term of 5 years imprisonment."

And in 2004:

"In “God’s Country,” the writer Eliza Griswold, daughter of the Rt. Rev. Frank Griswold, former Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, describes a retributive massacre in the Nigerian town of Yelwa carried out in 2004 by a well-organized band of men, wearing clothing and tags that identified them as members of the Christian Association of Nigeria. Akinola was president of CAN during the massacre, which Human Rights Watch reports claimed the lives of approximately 700 Muslims. Dozens of others were kidnapped, raped or maimed...When asked if those wearing name tags that read “Christian Association of Nigeria” had been sent to the Muslim part of Yelwa, the archbishop grinned. “No comment,” he said. “No Christian would pray for violence, but it would be utterly naive to sweep this issue of Islam under the carpet.” He went on, “I’m not out to combat anybody. I’m only doing what the Holy Spirit tells me to do. I’m living my faith, practicing and preaching that Jesus Christ is the one and only way to God, and they respect me for it. They know where we stand. I’ve said before: let no Muslim think they have the monopoly on violence.”

I saw this all in a firedoglake post on Michael Gerson favicon who has spent several Op-Eds decrying Barack Obama's pastor and the latter's failure to leave his church over the reverend's occasional inflammatory or off-the-wall statements....Gerson is a member of the Falls Church in Falls Church, Va. His congregation and the nearby Truro Church, played the key role in leading 11 Virginia parishes out of the Episcopal Church after the Church consecrated Gene Robinson, an openly gay man as bishop in 2003 and joining with Rev Akinola's group.

So by some christian right beliefs, you can act like the Nazi's did wrt treatment of gays and other religions in your midst. I'm curious though....where did Jesus ever preach any of that stuff? Old Testiment, sure. new Testiment, no way. Saul/Paul and a couple others, maybe. Jesus? never.

CNN is calling NC for Obama way early

which suggests their exit polling shows a blow out.

Clinton currently has a 14% lead in counted votes in Indiana (with roughly a quarter of precincts counted). She'll almost certainly win, the question is if it is single or double digits.
