Happy Birthday Thomas Jefferson
|
You da man. He would be a ripe 265 years old today. See Liberty Papers more below the fold. |
Ka1igu1a has been posting video clips from HBO's new masterpiece miniseries John Adams with Jefferson at Freedom Democrats, which dons a simple quote from from the J man in its header:
"Equal rights for all, special privileges for none."
See clips:
General Video Post with intro music.
John Adams and Jefferson musing over the Constitution and the nature of man and government.
Jefferson vs. Hamilton. A view of the contentious nature of George Washington's first cabinet where Jefferson and Hamilton were at each other throats over the nature of government at almost every turn.
Great Stuff.
And another hat tip to Ka1igu1a for this sad story . Some 20 libertarians were harassed by police and one was arrested at the Jefferson Memorial for dancing in silence to iPod music (so as to not disturb others). It was organized thru Facebook. When one of the people questioned the police's orders to disperse, she was arrested for misconduct. If only Jefferson could see this. Terrible. See Kal's link for reactions from Julian Sanchez, Megan McArdle and Radley Balko.
Anyway, Happy Birthday to Jefferson and remember him as he wanted to be remembered . Notice the absence of any government office...especially as our third President. It was not a source pride or achievement for him and he didn't want it on his tombstone....in typical Jeffersonian fashion.

Good stuff
Thanks for the write up and links. I need to swing by Freedom Democrats more.
Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson
yea, go republicans
I still like him even though John Marshall kicked his ass all over the place, stupid federalists.
Confused
Jefferson's Democratic-Republican party evolved into today's Democratic Party. The modern Republican Party was started in the 1850s as a response to the crumbling Whig Party.
Of course, you might mean small 'r' republican, to which I'd agree that he was (as was most every founder). A small 'r' republican and a small 'l' libertarian.

The labels of that era
bear very little resemblance to today's world. the paradigms were mostly different.
Jefferson
is one of my least favorite of the Founders.
Other than the Declaration of Independence he didn't much, unless you want to give him credit for French giving away their land in the New World.
He's fine by me
He was an intellectual leader, for certain. His personal life left much to be desired.
I did enjoy his sidestep of his own strict constructionist philosophy, though. When considering the Louisiana purchase, he looked at the constitution to find which section outlined the procedures for buying land. There, of course, were none. Jefferson slyly came up with the idea of "inherent powers". I think that was the archetypal example of a politician fooling himself into believing something he didn't really believe in the name of political expediency.
If he really was the strict constructionist he claimed to be, he would have pushed for the constitution to be amended so that he and the congress could make the purchase.

I'll be posting scenes from Part 6: "Unnecessary War"
The scene where Jefferson confronts Adams over the Alien and Seditions Act..
Adams calling Hamilton a raving lunatic and then firing Pickering and Mchenry after he disbands the Army
The poignant scene where the abolitionist Adams' first arrive at the new capitol/White House and realize it's being built by slave labor.

hurry and catch up/
are you liking it?
It brings families together :-)
It's a great show. My fiancée and I are enjoying watching it together (there aren't many shows we both like -- in fact, as I type this she is watching The Bachelor: London Calling and I just spent a few hours watching hockey).
I wasn't much of a fan of Mr. Giamatti as an actor, but he has done a great job of portraying John Adams in the series.
