Censorship of the Left

There have been a slew of diaries, one on the Rec list right now, ripping into the Washington Post for running an article that describes the religious attacks against Barack Obama. I have difficulty understanding those who write and endorse diaries expressing this view. What exactly do they expect of the news media, other than reporting on the values of the voters of this country, and how these preconceptions are manipulated by political operatives.

Here's how the Post's article that is castigated begins:

Foes Use Obama's Muslim Ties to Fuel Rumors About Him

By Perry Bacon Jr.

In his speeches and often on the Internet, the part of Sen. Barack Obama's biography that gets the most attention is not his race but his connections to the Muslim world.

Since declaring his candidacy for president in February, Obama, a member of a congregation of the United Church of Christ in Chicago, has had to address assertions that he is a Muslim or that he had received training in Islam in Indonesia, where he lived from ages 6 to 10. While his father was an atheist and his mother did not practice religion, Obama's stepfather did occasionally attend services at a mosque there.

The article was clear that the majority of Americans know nothing about Obama's background, not how he was reared, nothing about his family, and nothing about his current religion. The article described how his opponents are exploiting this ignorance by spreading false stories, and the potential effectiveness of this action.

And we are angry at the Post for describing this sociological- political-demographic phenomenon.

We on this site are sensitive and outraged by the losses of civil liberties under the Bush administration. We value our freedoms and dread the idea of a central government that would deny us the right to free association, freedom of speech. But there are many kinds of oppression. And the kind of rejection against the Washington Post article needs to be better understood.

No one is claiming that the article was false, only that it shined a light on a type of thinking in this country. Is this not the purpose of a free press. And why are we not defending this right. This story was well written and can only be considered an attack piece by those who have a desire to intimidate everyone who will not parrot their own values.

The list is ever expanding. Rush Limbaugh, because he is a rabble rousing conservative does not have the right to parody one of our people, especially if he is African American. And Bill O'Reilly, in spite of his allowing those from the other side a modicum of a voice, is only to be hated. It is not enough that we see the Fox types as the enemy, now we are demanding that the Washington Post adhere to our rules.

Doris Lessing, who recently won the Nobel Prize in Literature wrote this article of the tradition of the left, the unfortunate tradition of mind control that still accepts censorship as a part of the old communist mentality.

WHILE we have seen the apparent death of Communism, ways of thinking that were either born under Communism or strengthened by Communism still govern our lives. Not all of them are as immediately evident as a legacy of Communism as political correctness.

The first point: language. It is not a new thought that Communism debased language and, with language, thought. There is a Communist jargon recognizable after a single sentence. Few people in Europe have not joked in their time about “concrete steps,” “contradictions,” “the interpenetration of opposites,” and the rest.

There are many dangers to freedom that go beyond anything that an overzealous President can impose. We must value free expression, the right of all media to report what they believe to be newsworthy. This was a meaningful and fair article describing the vulnerability of one of the major candidates for President.

It is a gross distortion to claim that this article was an attack on Obama. And it is telling that the diary currently on the recommended list doesn't even provide the link to the actual article. Some of those willing to condemn it don't even feel the need to actually evaluate the article itself, merely accepting that it shows that the Post has become the enemy.

Unless we rise above this mentality of seeing the world exclusively in terms of them or us, we have lost what makes this party different. We have become one side of the descent into anti-intellectualism that will surely be the underlying explanation for the failure of this audacious experiment in self government.

I haven't read the diary to which this is apparently addressed,

and I certainly don't support censoring stories such as this one by the WaPo, but I do think it's a hack article -- not because it's an attack piece, but because it's lazy copy/paste masquerading as journalism. The reporter just lists (and quotes!) all the smears and then (at least) gets a reaction from Obama's campaign.

Can you imagine a WaPo article about whether Hillary is a lesbian? "Her campaign denies this" and views these allegations as "an attempt to tap into anti-gay sentiment" but "many of those polled said they were unsure of Hillary's sexual orientation" and blah blah blah... I mean come on, tell me about the details of her health care proposal, not what various sleazy blogs or magazines are claiming.

That said, I imagine you were responding to something specific as far as attitudes on dKos towards the media and I'd probably agree with your overall point. If dKos were less knee-jerk I would read it more and would have more context for this post =)

…………

Double message of this diary..

First there is the issue of the fairness and appropriateness of the WaPo article. It is not the most brilliant of articles, but it could never be described as a hit piece, which is the universal and vociferous reaction by Dailykos members.

This becomes the story in itself, that the left blogisphere no longer accept legitimate journalism, but rather expects, demands, the pejorative language that is used no their sites.

The claim that Obama is a Muslim at heart is appropriately referred to as a rumor, not, as Dailykos demands, a "lie." The writer clearly states in the first paragraph that Obama is a Member of the United Church of Christ and goes into extensive detail that intrinsically refutes the rumor.

But, in fact, it can not be known what anyone actually believes, whether Giuanni is, in fact a believer in the Bible as he states, or an atheist. All the reporter can do is give facts, which this one did.

Dailykos, and to me this is tragic, sees the world as good and evil, which maps to left or right. And becomes irate when anyone else does not share their perspective.

It would be tragic if their were no standards beside partisanship, which is what the extreme left seems to be accepting, and now promoting. And the ubiquity of the condemnation, hundreds of comments on several diaries, is beyond distressing.

This article in the Washington Post was responsible journalism, not great journalism, but in the tradition of a free and robust press. It deserves to be defended against being described as a covert attack piece.

Well, I can agree that it deserves

"to be defended against being described as a covert attack piece" but I question whether the WaPo article serves any productive purpose. I don't think that serious journalism should generally involve examining internet hoaxes.

OTOH, my experience also supports this: Dailykos, and to me this is tragic, sees the world as good and evil, which maps to left or right. And becomes irate when anyone else does not share their perspective. Good luck trying to change that...

Dem vs. Rep

DKos is pretty explicit about being a partisan Democratic site (not "leftist), and so yeah, they see it all as "democrat vs. republican", and due to that "they" (or many members of that community) want to pressure anyone and everyone to behave in a way that benefits Democrats.

It's partisanship, it sucks, and it's not unique to the left.

Rumor vs "Made up"

The claim that Obama is a Muslim at heart is appropriately referred to as a rumor, not, as Dailykos demands, a "lie."

I believe the key word that was missing was "False". Odd that the story wasn't on the racism and religious bigotry involved. Instead it was on how these rumors, which we will now repeat over and over again, could impact his run.

I say we look into other, equally well supported rumors

Rumor-mongering, (which is being overly generous) does not equal Journalism

………… parent

analogies are not correct.

Many of the excoriations of the WaPo article equated the rumors around Obama's religion with "blowing goats" and "being a pedophile", or "Hillary's Lesbianism."

There is a difference.

Obama was exposed to the Islamic teaching and has an ethnic educational connection which is real, not based on unsubstantiated and created events. Perry Bacon, the writer, was explicit, and correct in describing Obama's educational background and his personal religious history.

He then described what the right wing operatives are doing to exaggerate his Islamic connection. I maintain, after several readings of the article, that this was legitimate coverage of the background of and attacks on a major presidential candidate.

Every report on an an attack could be construed as publicizing it, but that would mean that the public is not informed about such dynamics.

I maintain that the criticism of the WaPol article was wrong, abd in the spirit of controlling communications and defining correct expressions that is in the tradition of what Doris Lessing describes in my diary.

The WaPo article was appropriate. And the concerted attack against it was a sign of pathological partisanship that has infected our society.

………… parent

Constrain yourself to the rules you suggest for others.

So, this would be one of the main DKos diaries/posts.

Tell me; where there is a falsehood? Where is the partisanship? How does this not live up (at least) to the standards that you claim WaPo lived up to? Don't you see something a wee bit ironic about attacking diaries for attacking news stories? I really don't see how one is just trying to stand up for truth and freedom while the other is an act of hyperpartisanship.
(Interesting that you did NOT include a link to the diary in question that you were attacking, all while attacking the diary for not including a link to the story?)

Here. How's this?

I maintain that the criticism of the WaPol article DailyKos diary was wrong, abd (sic) in the spirit of controlling communications and defining correct expressions that is in the tradition of what Doris Lessing describes in my your diary.

………… parent

Clever, let me elaborate.

The diary that I referenced was a few paragraphs and described a Wapo cartoon that agreed with the sentiment of Dkos. There was also an editorial in Columbia Journalism Review, and the vast majority of comments on the WaPo online article that agreed with the criticism of Perry Bacon's original article.

Rather than this being validation of the appropriateness of the attack, it shows a contagion that has nothing to do with a rational analysis of the original article, or the value of main stream media.

I made my point as well as I could. And my diary is meaningful for the shunning, the lack of comments, recs of my tip jar, and recommendations. Once the enemy is defined by the angry left, that appears to be the end of the discussion.

Of course the diarists who criticized the WaPo article have every right to do so. I am commenting on a phenomenon, the universal acceptance of this condemnation without an in depth discussion of what this implies.

This is what I was attempting to foster on Dailykos, and on this site. It is somewhat more successful here.

………… parent

There was a diary on the rec list the other day

that annoyed me -- basically copy/paste of a Krugman article that was ripping Obama for adopting "right wing frames" on health care and social security. The diary had no analysis -- I mean none. Everything that wasn't blockquote was essentially cheerleading.

I am commenting on a phenomenon, the universal acceptance of this condemnation without an in depth discussion of what this implies.

I agree with your identification of this phenomenon, even though I remain convinced that the WaPo story on Obama was basically crap.

Jay Elias had a diary a long time back that I remember asking people to convince him that the S-CHIP expansion was good. Just to force people to make the case instead of letting them fall into the easy pattern of me-tooing favorable editorials or condemning criticism without further discussion.

Come, my friends. 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world -- Tennyson

………… parent

Contagion? That seems to be skipping the discussion as well

The problem is that there has been a pretty constant effort from folks on the Right (the Coulter types being the spokespersons) to make people feel uncomfortable with Obama. There are the usual racists who will never vote for a black man and some folks are trying to get the religious bigots on board. They want people SCARED that if they don't show up and vote for the Republican, even if they don't like them, they'll be under the rule of Osama Obama.

Surely you don't think the common Osama/Obama speaking error is unrelated to the

assertions that he is a Muslim or that he had received training in Islam in Indonesia, where he lived from ages 6 to 10

I haven't seen a lot of people calling it an intentional "hit piece" as much as folks calling it incredibly sloppy. The temporal ambiguity, where he IS a member of the United Church of Christ, but there have been assertions that he is a trained Muslim (Aaaah! Sleeper Agent, Aaaah!) is just poor writing; especially considering that this is the entire uncertainty that certain folks are trying to push.

What was the point of this highly publicized article? Hey! In case you forgot, some people think that Obama is really a Muslim, but is trying to cover it up. How about actually going into the Who? And not some unknown, but the political operatives and think tanks that have been pushing this meme for so long. That they skipped right on by the intent to deceive involved in the original fabricators of this story is why so many people consider it to be a bunch of lazy hackery; not because of what was said, but because of what wasn't said.

Finally, is it not possible that perhaps, that near-universal acceptance of the condemnation is for just cause? Do you believe it was a "good" article that should have been publishes as-is?

………… parent

This sort of subtle negative campaigning

sadly, works on those who don't pay close attention.

A Republican friend, on the phone was complaining about his sides candidates and mentioned that he liked Joe Biden. I told him, I liked Obama. His reply to me was, "oh you mean the muslim'.

It is the economy, stupid.

………… parent

Yes, It is a good article...

But I am in the minority. Frank Rich today referred to it as "scurrilous"

I keep re-reading the article to see if I missed something. Every accusation that he is a sleeper Muslim out to subvert America is referenced to his political enemies.

And consider the audience of Bacon's work. His beat is the political wars between the candidates. He talks about their vulnerabilities and the attacks on them.

I suppose if this content were aired during a SuperBowl half time, when the very association of Obama with Islam would be all that millions would retain then the argument against the words of his article would have more validity.

Let me be clear here. The reason I wrote this diary in Dailykos, and repeated it here, goes beyond this particular WaPo article. Dailykos, a site that I happen to have an affinity for, has often attacked the MSM, main stream media, with a vengence whenever there is a harsh light shined on a Progressive.

There is a long pattern of going after anyone who has an open mind, who does not adhere to the party line. Now in this case, Bacon was not criticizing Obama at all. He was reporting on those who are trying to undermine his viability as a candidate, because he did have exposure to the Islam as a child.

Bacon wrote a factual piece addressed to those who follow political infighting, not to the uninformed public. There were some errors in attributions of some of the statements that were mentioned in some of the criticisms, but they did not change basic question of legitimacy of this article.

No one reads anything without a pre-existing perception of the goals of the writer. Numerous studies who that the same paragraph, when given a different author, is interpreted differently by readers.

I remain convinced that this article was informative and even useful to Obama. It describes the accusations and then attributes them to right wing sources. Thus there is an inoculation effect, that weakens the accusation when it is first heard from unknown sources.

I'm not nominating this article for a Pulitzer, only saying it is a reasonable article appropriate for the section of the media and the audience that it was addressed to.

arodb has testicular check-up

said an article in the Peanut Times. He is said to have visited the Proctologist last week. There are those that have questioned whether this is rumor or whether this is true. The records show that he did in fact visit the Proctologist last week. It is said that his ex-wife is trying to undermine his future marriage.

After talking to his fiancee, she acknowledged that indeed, arodb did visit the Proctologist, but it was just a check up, and that is nothing at all wrong.

There is said to be a bit of tension between arodb's ex-wife and his fiancee. His ex wife said he visited the Proctologist at least once a month. Incidentally the Doctor was a female in her mid thirties, and a good friend of the fiancee. Rumors that he had testicular problems have been swirling but seen to have been put to rest.

Arodb standing next to his fiancee who was smiling, has declared he has a clean bill of health, and was very happy with the Doctors report.

It is the economy, stupid.

Oh My God...

How could you know all this!!!!!

So it's true then

the rumor has been confirmed.

But did you have an affair with the thrity-somethingish proctologist, and lie about it to your finance. While some say yes, others say no.
