Murtha: "I think the 'surge' is working," :
U.S. Rep. John Murtha today said he saw signs of military progress during a brief trip to Iraq last week, but he warned that Iraqis need to play a larger role in providing their own security and the Bush administration still must develop an exit strategy.
Read the article. More optimistic spouting from Murtha. I am pretty sure there won't be any timelines on the War funding. Time for liberals to declare this guy a traitor. Hope you have a great Friday!

Political progress = ?
Reconciliation = ?
Victory = ?
Winning = ?
The new word being used to help lower expectations is one step below reconciliation, accomodation.
If bribes and apertheid was the answer in the first place, the US could have saved a lot of money on bullets and medicine.
As far as Murtha being a hero....... he has the courage to speak up about what he sees, Ender, he isn't playing stupid little games like you are just for the sake of some political agenda.
But of course none of this BS is the real Bush agenda, the real Bush agenda is go dominate and loot the country of its resources, and Maliki in his $2,000 suit is on board the gravy train.
It is the economy, stupid.
If the agenda was to loot the country of its resources, they
did a pretty lousy job of it. We've sunk tons of money into Iraq but we're not getting much out.
Now, there does seem to be some overcharging happening as the war goes on, which could be viewed as looting from American tax payers =P

Murtha, the corrupt porkmeister?
I'm fine with him acknowledging obvious security gains over the past few months, but speaking for myself, he's not a political hero:

hehehe skymutt
I am impressed with your list of your own official statements :) He is obviously not your hero. But you can't deny that he attained quite the heroic status in the early Dem vs Bush war funding clashes... Nowadays the battles seem to be over.

Well, my past statements are very important, because I'm right most of the time ;-)

Mission Accomplished
As far as I'm concerned, the troops have completed their mission of giving the Iraqi government room to work out a deal -- which they didn't. Its time for them to come home unless the mission has changed again.
Could a conservative or someone who supports the occupation give me an idea of:
1) What the current mission is and,
2) A definition of success in that mission
No snark here. I'm really curious.

Liberals think that
the PNAC & the Cheney arm of conservatism just wants the oil and the geographic base to strong arm the rest of the middle east.
On NPR this morning they had a news report about oil & the US. Right now the US spend $0.5 Trillion a year on it's oil, more than half imported and almost all of that going to regimes that are undemocratic and don't support the American view of the world. It's we the American people who are paying for Osama and his pliant governments to screw us every single day.
Is there any better reason to drop the combustion engine and use battery powered vehicles RIGHT NOW?

lots of ways
yes, but none that can even come close to compensating for our current use of fossil fuels.
What we need is a change in energy usage, not to simply get hooked on a new drug.

Looks like the Texas Board of Education wants to teach
Creationism like it's equal to evolution.
Well, actually they want to teach Intelligent Design like it's equal to evolution as a sceintific point of view.
The C&L link is great but link through to the Pharyngula & BadAstronomy threads. I feel really bad for the lady that the Govenor & his creationist believin' cronies forced to resign because she wrote an e-mail about a heads up on an upcomming lecture.
Now apparently "unbiased scientific agenda" means Creationism/ID is of the same value as Darwinism. The whole "Teach the Controversy" is straight out of The Discovery Institues "The Wedge" paper
.
I really like my Texan freinds but I am so lucky I don't live there.

Did US Bloggers get AP photographer Bilal
Hussein arrested and held without charges since 2006?
This article from photo district news says Rusty from the JAWA Report did just that by goading US Forces in Iraq.
I'm sickened when I read this. If anyone could be locked up without charges and not come out wanting to hate the US after all this, they are closer to god than I am probably.
The good news; the army says he will be brought up on charges soon. At least then he can possibly defend himself. The other good news....I believe in a soul. Rusty from JAWA and the fascists from LGF & Michelle Malkin have scorthed theirs if what this article says is true. If it turns out he was in cahoots with the insurgents, he should have been charged, not secretly held like King George III would have held him. Remember that guy? He's the one that got us to declare Independence from the crown of England.

Wild Palms
I just got done re-watching the old De Palma miniseries Wild Palms.
I had seen a number of years ago and generally enjoyed it and wanted to see it again as it centers on political struggles. It has a number of good actors (although at many points the acting itself can be rather bad, Dana Delaney is especially disappointing) and the story line is fairly interesting.
A couple quotes leapt out at me this time, my favorite of which was this:
Nice.
The story centers on a struggle between two political parties, the conservative "Fathers" who have strong scientology connections, and the more liberal "Friends."
I certainly wouldn't call the miniseries a great work of art, but there are many small nice touches that elevate it from usual TV fare, especially when it was made. I particularly love how very suburban and normal everything seems at the beginning so that the viewer is forced through the same awakening as the main character.
