Dumb and Stupid "Stuff" from the GOP debates last night

Well, not that there was one thing that fits this category..or even just a few. But I'd like to point out a few that really pissed me off last night or provoked nausea or both.

First: The Hillary "Pinyata". LAME! DENSE! WORTHLESS! and very, very CHEAP!

I swear. National "red meat" Politics can be such a joke. And Partisan National "red meat" Politics can border on intellectually criminal and childish. We all know the GOP hates Hillary. Big Deal. And we all know the candidates will generally go out of their way to poke an insult at her to get some cheers from the faithful. Sadly, and quite frankly, it's a worthless exercise.

The "focus group" orchestrated by Luntz was just as pathetic though sadly accurate in portraying the viewpoint of the "average voter". From this debate, they wanted someone to "step up". What that means exactly, regardless of how you define it, is totally worthless. They also wanted someone to show they can beat that socialist Hillary. Many liked Huckabee by night's end. I can see why, though I don't condone it: He sounds nice and folksy while saying things that sound good but meant absolutely nothing in terms of what a president can do. He does seem like a genuinely nice man though.

Luntz was delighted to show his revelation: The opinion-dial meter went through the roof when they bashed Hillary....WOW. Luntz may be onto something substantive with that observation!! duh.

Second: Duncan Hunter. This man is by far the worst candidate on the stage. He is the stereo-typical angry middle-age white man but with a suit and tie. I was waiting for him to walk out to a p-up truck awash with stickers like "These Colors Don't Run".

The highlight (er...lowlight) was in the post debate chit-chat with H&C. We went on and on about how Bill Clinton hurt this country with the military cuts. I was actually in the room when he started this rant and dropped everything to run back and listen with disturbed fascination.

He went on and on about how those cuts (with lots of bi-partisan support I might add) weakened with country in its ability to fight the War on "Terr'r". It was supposed to be a Peace Dividend but we didn't "git th'peace", he said. This type of argument has gotten steam in recent years as chicken hawks, ditto-heads and angry "yes men" have tried to find stuff to complain about as the occupation got stretched thin and bogged down. It also serves as a cute way to put an (*) by Clinton era budget numbers by claiming it was all military cuts, which is was not. It also deflected blame for all the jacked up military spending over the last 6 years.

A few glaring problems: He then admitted to Colmes in the next breath that the military did a better than expected job in taking Bagdhad and routing the Taliban in record time...which is true for what it's worth. Military prowess was not lost with those cuts because most of those cuts were in defunct areas that no longer served a real purpose. In short, a totally bunk and stupid point by Hunter. Defeating "Al Quaeda" and "Terrorism", in so far as it can be done, is not a real military solution in the conventional sense. A few more divisions, planes and tanks isn't going to change anything...neither would a lot more unless we plan on invading more countries while continuing to occupy Iraq and Afghanistan.

Armies are for doing battle, not occupying countries. And we fight battles quite. There's little else to gain. Besides, Bush never went into Iraq with the full force of the military and thought it could be occupied with a much smaller force than were capable of going in with. In short, he did it on the cheap with plenty to spare and still worked more than fine. Our foreign policy problems are not rooted in an undersized military. Some would argue the opposite. Finally, any lack of peace we've had since Clinton cut the military has nothing to do with those cuts at all and would have changed nothing....NOTHING. What a moron.

Hunter is an utter fool for trying to claim that a larger military would have changed anything at all in terms of war and peace in the last 12-14 years.

I'm not dismissive of it

I'm just saying it doesn't matter in the GOP debates and only makes for cheap theater amounting to nothing but "feel good" junk.

The funniest part...

... was listening to Ron Paul getting booed by the audience for pointing out that 70% of Americans want to bring the troops home from Iraq.

I hope Republicans keep booing him as that number continues to rise and Bush's number continues to decline.

Talk about out-of-touch. The Titanic ain't got nuthin' on the Republicans for `08.

If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?

…………

Speaking of Bush's poll numbers ...

You might find this interesting ...

Some interesting poll results.

For what it's worth, I'm a Guiliani

supporter, but I think McCain did the best last night.

name the enemy, win the war

…………

Giuliani

Strictly on the issues, Guiliani is probably the least objectionable of the bunch, but only if you go by his record. He and Romney are pandering so much, I can't really tell how much of a commitment either has to gay rights.

When you get to his foreign policy, which is frankly insane, he becomes much less palatable. If you think Bush is pushing executive power to it's limits, wait until he gets into office. Two terms of Giuliani, especially if another attack happens, is enough to push us past the point of no return in terms of our republican form of government. I'd bet even money that we'd be in dictatorship land.

My prefs are, in order:

Paul
Kucinich
Edwards

Edwards is very soft, and Dodd might be in there if he keeps playing ball on FISA. It's looking like I'm going to vote Libertarian again in '08. Speaking of which, does anyone know who they're thinking of running?

I think it was some guy

named Steve Cubby (?)...ring a bell?

I'm definitely not voting for anyone who is currently polling above 5%.

I'm sorry but they all suck. I just hope Paul keeps making a good showing and keeping his perspective in the race. He's raising a lot of money and intends to keep plugging away. Good for him.

I'm actually surprised that you support him. You did not strike me as such.

Kubby is supporting Paul for now

But Kubby does have a cool animated video on his site Kubby 2008

George Phillies is the other "major" Libertarian candidate. He is not a fan of Ron Paul from what I gather.

I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

Saw it

Awesome video.

Yeah, I see Phillies at Dkos every now and then. Seems like a good man.

Paul

He shares my views on federalism. (see my entry on Roll Call for a good explanation why I support him)

If he was running for Governor of Ohio I wouldn't give him the time of day. I especially think he's needed now to restrict the growth of executive power after 8 years of Bush/Cheney.

Mitt had the "Elvis" thing going on with his hair

and then it was magically fixed. He must carry a secret stash of hairspray on him.

In any event, the GOP has just now stripped New Hampshire, Florida, South Carolina, Michigan and Wyoming of half their delegates which effectively gives Rudy the nomination.

Ron Paul, I predict, will end up running as an independent

Paul has firmly stated that he won't

and has said so several times. But hey, if his coffers stay loaded, he may just change his mind and keep going.

I hope he does.

You haven't been reading FD....

Someone YouTubed Paul's private meeting with contributing supporters last weekend in NY and briefly had them exposed as "public" and I was able to capture one of the Vids before they were made private.

In it, a former NY "young republican" pleads for Paul to run as an independent and "destroy the republican party" and Paul pooh pahs it, saying he will decide on that later, but his wife couldn't resist and let's the cat out of the bag IMHO.

I think Paul is waiting to see how much money he raises this quarter, how much his internet volunteer base expands, how well he does among independents in the early primaries, and if it's a Rudy v Hillary matchup, he will make the run.

I hope so.

At least I'll be able to vote for president in the general elections with a clear conscience!

I'd have to be paid to pull a lever for either of those others.

My theory on Mitt's

My theory on Mitt's hairstyle change: The Flip...er...Mitt campaign focus grouped the hair issue and found that Republican primary voters might find him more appealing with less perfect hair. However, their polling and focus groups during the debate contradicted that earlier indication. There was no need for anyone to actually inform Flip...darnit...Mitt, because he naturally sensed this new finding. Nor was it necessary for Fl...Mitt to do anything -- once he sensed a different public opinion, his hair automatically self-corrected via an involuntary, reflexive, chameleon-like reaction.

Anyway, that's just my theory.
