Why did Cheney/Rove/Bush/Rumsfeld lie about the manner of Tillman's death?

When the President, the Vice President and the military brass lie about how a soldier died on the battlefield, the soldier's family is betrayed, the soldier's fellow soldiers are betrayed and the people of the nation are betrayed.

So the question becomes, why do those in power lie about how the soldier died?

Today, we are getting some answers in a Congress that has decided to take seriously its responsibilities as a co-equal branch of government. (A responsibility all but ignored under Republican leadership.)

According to the article, linked above:

WASHINGTON -- In explosive testimony, Kevin Tillman, brother of Cpl. Pat Tillman, the former NFL player who was killed in action in Afghanistan, accused the Bush administration of twisting the facts of his brother's death to distract public attention from the prisoner abuses at Abu Ghraib.

The U.S. Army fabricated a story of his brother's heroism in action, knowing he was killed by friendly fire, Tillman said. They constructed not only a story of combat action -- accompanied by a silver medal -- but lied about his medical care, saying he was transferred to a field hospital for continued medical care for 90 minutes after the incident, when the back of his head was blown off.

"These are deliberate and calculated lies" and "a deliberate act of deceit," Tillman said.

With his voice shaking, Tillman, who also served in the Army, said the official account of his brother's death in 2004 was "utter fiction…intended to deceive the family and more importantly the American people."

The lying by this administration continues unabated to this day, of course.

"The surge is making progress," is only the latest lie to emerge form the lips of Bush and Cheney. The ugly truth is that the only thing "surging" is U.S. casualties. Yet these two certified liars want to question the patriotism of those telling the truth about Iraq.

When do conservatives stand up and call out this administration for sacrificing American lives -- and the truth -- to cover their own miserable failings?

So please, conservatives, spare us any more sermons on "personal responsibility." The current occupiers of the Executive branch have yet to take responsibility for all the massive wrongs they have created.

And not only do they deny any personal responsibility, they lie to cover their own failings.

That much has been proved in the Tillman case.

Talk about unAmerican. Lying about how a soldier died to protect their own hides.

I don;t want to hear another word about "personal responsibility" from conservatives until they lay the blame for this epic disaster at the feet of those who deserve it and who prolong it only to protect themselves.

Sending even more of our fellow citizens to their deaths to cover their own failures is the epitome of unAmerican. And not in the least patriotic.

'Support the troops," my ass.

They sicken me and those who support them are worse.

Bush awarded Tillman the Silver Star.

The military and Bush knew full well that Tillman died from friendly fire.

Yet here is what Bush and his fellow liars in the military brass did :

The Army began crafting Tillman's Silver Star application in the days just after his death; and according to transcripts of investigation witness statements, top Army officials already suspected fratricide when they wrote it. In his witness statement, Capt. William Saunders acknowledged providing the information needed for Tillman's recommendation, stating "we became aware that his death was a possible fratricide" before its submission. During a separate interview with investigators, Saunders, the company commander, said when he arrived at the scene of the battle early on the morning after Tillman died, he was told fratricide was suspected.

Less than 24 hours after Tillman was killed, military documents further reveal, Army brass told Capt. Richard Scott fratricide was suspected when Scott, another company commander within Kauzlarich's regiment, was assigned the initial inquiry. Army records show the Silver Star recommendation was submitted April 27, before the investigation was completed, and signed two days later by Les Brownlee, acting Secretary of the Army. The award was presented to Tillman's family a week later in San Jose, just days before the memorial service.

...

As awarded, the citation reads:

"Corporal Tillman put himself in the line of devastating enemy fire as he maneuvered his Fire Team to a covered position from which they could effectively employ their weapons on known enemy positions. While mortally wounded, his audacious leadership and courageous example under fire inspired his men to fight with great risk to their own personal safety, resulting in the enemy's withdrawal and his platoon's safe passage from the ambush kill zone."

No one else on the battlefield that evening was awarded a Silver Star. Only Tillman.

So while the administration was busy rushing through Tillman's Silver Star under false pretenses, Bush and the administration already knew that they were lying about how he died:

General tried to warn Bush about Tillman

From the Associated Press
3:10 PM PDT, March 30, 2007

SAN JOSE -- Just seven days after Pat Tillman's death, a top general warned there were strong indications that it was friendly fire and President Bush might embarrass himself if he said the NFL star-turned-soldier died in an ambush, according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press.

It was not until a month afterward that the Pentagon told the public and grieving family members the truth — that Tillman was mistakenly killed in Afghanistan by his comrades.

The memo reinforces suspicions that the Pentagon was more concerned with sparing officials from embarrassment than with leveling with Tillman's family.

In a memo sent to a four-star general a week after Tillman's April 22, 2004, death, then-Maj. Gen. Stanley McChrystal warned that it was ''highly possible'' the Army Ranger was killed by friendly fire. McChrystal made it clear his warning should be conveyed to the president.

''I felt that it was essential that you received this information as soon as we detected it in order to preclude any unknowing statements by our country's leaders which might cause public embarrassment if the circumstances of Cpl. Tillman's death become public,'' McChrystal wrote on April 29, 2004, to Gen. John Abizaid, head of Central Command.

In other words, everyone knew. But they lied about it for PR purposes.

Of course, the White House spokesman pulled an Alberto Gonzales, claiming they could find no record of receiving such a warning.

"Can't recall..."

"Don't remember..."

"No record..."

Defend away, Ender.

These guys have proven to be blatant liars time and time again. Anything to protect themselves.

Unlike you, I apply my standards equally. I always thought Bill Clinton was a liar and never liked him because of that.

But these guys make Clinton look like a piker.

If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?

Bush Knows

He is being manipulative.

But his apologists I agree are worse......

It is the economy, stupid.

…………

My god that testimony was painful,

and you know the Republicans got up and walked out, of course. Blech.

I'm just happy that the family is finally getting results, after three years of trying.

The truth hurts.

At least they didn't sit there with their fingers in their ears, humming.

If you really believe this is the "fight of our lives," how come you're not in Iraq?

Obviously the truth doesn't hurt Bush/Cheney/Rove enough.

They lie at every turn, so it's not surprising that they lied about this, too.
